This brown is a thick one in the medium-dark range for the color with a dark red hue to it. The light brown head isn't much more than foam, but it keeps up a firm layer that deposits strong spotting.
Cocoa on the nose implies a heavy dose of chocolate malts, maybe a bit of caramel for backup, and its strongly hopped as well with notes of citrusy and floral hops. Rye spiciness shows up nicely, and the earthiness complements well. There's plenty of roast, too.
It comes off as an IPA with a burst of hops on the tongue, lots of citrus, leaf and pine. Following off of that is a creamy cocoa and toffee mixture, while the middle brings out roast and smoke before hops come back into the lingering finish. This is what they were going for, and the innovation works out. If the finish was cleaned up just slightly, it would be even better.
The body is a solid medium and carbonation is firm, a good amount of smoothness running through though crispness bites a little too hard.
