As advertised, it's thick and inky, not quite black but very dark brown. It's not as huge as some of its kind, but that's not saying much when the beer does leave a bit of a filmy coloration on the glass's walls. The head isn't much, a stiff little light brown one, but with some staying power and pretty good legging.
The beer looks to go dry, but is kept in check by an encroaching sweetness such that both aspects even each other out. Something like blackstrap and burnt toffee make up the sweeter notes, some bigger roast into the middle leading to lightly charred woods. There's just a touch of tang, but one that integrates well with the overall character, tart dark fruits evening into a creamier sweetness even as charcoal and a hint of something almost meaty and evoking thoughts of smoke, however mildly, before sweetness comes with the roast and woods to finish it out together. Alcohol is warming for sure, playing into the flavor with a tingle but not a burn.
Big, rich and thick but without being too heavy, it's a sipper that's easier to put down in its own way. Alcohol works its way in without thinning, and the semi-dry feel really works. Carbonation and crispness are light, the latter seeming not to appear for a moment at first but kicking in just to give it some life, at which point it relies on its rich body, flow, and smoothness with contrast from the drying on the tongue.
