Served in a snifter today, 02.16.15, at Mutz Bar in Toledo.
A: Pours a thick, opaque shade of charcoal with zero head, a bit of sheeting, and very little lacing.
S: Cocoa, a sweet vegetal aroma from the chili, dried red fruit, and a boozy sweetness from the barrel.
T: Fantastic stuff here. It opens with rich cocoa; raisins, cherries, and plums; and spent coffee grounds. Underneath that is sweet vanilla and mild cinnamon. Pervading everything is an intense chili heat. Really enjoyable tingle all the way through. The barrel is present mainly to round out the rough edges, but it also reinforces the vanilla and adds a sweet oaky booziness to the beer.
M: Incredibly smooth and velvety, but perhaps a bit thin and a tad watery. Not bad by any stretch, but I thought a bit more heft on the mouthfeel would push this into world-class territory.
O: Delicious, delicious beer. Not to overstate things, but this tastes a fair bit like Huna Jr.: lots of the same flavors, though without the heft of Huna. Loved the spice level: just hot enough to be noticeable, but never a distraction.
