The beer, dubbed “Creature from the Alegae Bloom,” is a sour double IPA crafted by a Toledo microbrewery using matcha. It was brewed in hopes of creating awareness of the harmful algae blooms, or microcystis cyanobacteria, that plague the lake each July and last through October.

Hazy golden color with some white head. Taste of some tea and tropical fruits notably kiwi and grapefruit. Not overly sour but moderately hoppy. A beer good to the end

Really unique. Perfect mix of an IPA and a sour.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 9/6/2018. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy medium golden/amber color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lightly tart/tangy kiwis, fruit skin, orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, red/green apple, matcha tea, white grape/wine, mango, watermelon, strawberry, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, wheat, cracker, white bread, light lacto funk, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, citrus/earthy hops, kiwis, matcha tea, and moderate pale/wheat malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lightly tart/tangy kiwis, fruit skin, orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, red/green apple, matcha tea, white grape/wine, mango, watermelon, strawberry, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, wheat, cracker, white bread, light lacto funk, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light pine, citrus peel/zest, herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness; lactic tartness, and fruit tang on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy kiwis, fruit skin, orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, red/green apple, matcha tea, white grape/wine, mango, watermelon, strawberry, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, wheat, cracker, white bread, light lacto funk, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, citrus/earthy hops, kiwis, matcha tea, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; with a great malt/bitter/tartness and tangy fruit balance; with no puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitter/tartness, and tangy fruit. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/acidic/tangy, fairly crisp, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.2%. Overall this is an excellent sour IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, citrus/earthy hops, kiwis, matcha tea, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth and fairly crisp/refreshing to drink with the mellowly bitter/tart/tangy/drying finish, not overly lactic. Great Amarillo/El Dorado profile. Great balance of juicy/dank/earthy hops, Lacto, kiwi, matcha tea, and pale/wheat malts against acidity. A very enjoyable/unique offering, and impressive style example. Not overwhelming on any aspect.

What a perfect name for this turbid and headless pale yellow beer, as it tastes quite vegetal with a thin, watery body that also brings to mind watermelon water, yet finishes powder dry.
