Tsarry Night is a black as night due to a blend of roasted malts and barley. These grains also impart a dry, roast grain character with notes of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and licorice. This beer is fairly strong and with strength comes a rich malt character that is balanced by an assertive dollop of bitterness added to the brew at the beginning of the kettle boil.

Before even tasting Springfield Brewing Company’s “Tsarry Night Russian Imperial Stout”, I had to smile widely at the play on words in the name “Tsarry Night” with the tongue in cheek twist of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” painting with the twisted spelling in the nod to Russian tsars since it is a Russian Imperial Stout. Kudos to Springfield Brewing Company for their brilliance in labeling design and naming what I consider to be the best Russian Imperial Stout beer on earth. From start to finish, the look, the taste, the finish, the lensmen and labeling, it all makes it the complete and perfect all around Imperial Stout. This one is a perfect sipper on a cool evening under the stars. Whoever came up with this one has my eternal gratitude.

Look: Dark brown with lots of bubbles. Smell: Lots of chocolate up front with the bourbon and coffee arriving later. Taste: Strong bourbon followed by coffee and some chocolate. Feel: A bit thin for the imperial stout style. Overall: 3.5. Not very complex, but still pretty good.
