Appearance - 3.0
Poured a bubbly half finger of beige head that quickly reduced to nothing. Colour is an attractive reddish brown with great clarity.
Smell - 4.0
A very sweet, malt driven aroma. Smells of maple syrup, toasted rye bread and a soft general fruitiness make this very pleasant to sniff.
Taste - 3.0
There is a slight off-flavour that I can't quite put a finger on. It is a shame, because otherwise this is very nice. Sweet, toasty, slightly roasted malt flavour, raisin-like fruitiness, noticeable alcohol and a nice hoppy bitterness in the dry finish.
Mouthfeel - 3.5
Moderately weighted, with a rather lively carbonation for the style that feels somewhat rough over the tongue. Gets better and smooths out with time in the glass.
Drinkability - 3.0
It was no struggle to finish, but I would probably not get this again.
OVERALL - 3.25
This beer has a certain characteristic that I also find present in my homebrews and in most Coopers ales. I do not know how to describe it, but it is an undesirable flavour that sits alongside the otherwise satisfactory flavour of the beer. Apart from this, a rather nice drink. Incidentally Ironbark makes 25 different beers, and rotates 8 at a time on their taps. Great to see a local brewery making styles like this.
