This dark mahogany lager is made in the traditional Bavarian style with malt forwardness and low bitterness. Dark but translucent, this full bodied beer pours with a thick and creamy, off-white head. No Göller beer has won more awards than the Dunkel. The earliest Dunkel was first brewed by the Benedictine monks who established the settlement of Munich in the middle of the 12th century. The Reinheitgebot (Purity Laws) caused the style to develop to what it is today: clean and smooth.

.5 liter swingtop bottle
Pours a clear mahogany brown color with a 2 finger soapy off-white head. Great retention. Leaves some nice sticky cobweb lacing.
Aroma has notes of honey toasted biscuits and grains, as well as some spicy hops. Slightly nutty and earthy.
Taste has freshly baked rye bread, roasted nuts, caramel, and spicy hops. There's some faint chocolate and honey as well.
Medium bodied with good carbonation. Creamy and smooth. Finishes dry.
This is a great dunkel. It's got full flavor but drinks light and easy. Really enjoy this one.

1/2 Liter swing top.
Clear reddish-brown with a huge lingering tan head.
Smells chocolaty and nutty with a hint of toasted bread.
Tastes like sweet chocolate mixed with a smooth nut butter in a strudel. There is a faint spicy/bitter aftertaste.
Feels fairly tingly from carbonation but finishes creamy. Medium light body.

Picked up a 500 ml bottle from the Appalachian Vintner in Asheville 6-20-25 for $4.99. Best before 4-21-2026; consumed for review 8-24-25. Cold stored since purchase.
Beer poured brown with a beautiful tan head.
Nose is toasted malts forward with a touch of earthy hops.
Taste is pumpernickel bread with a touch of chocolate. Hopping brings an earthiness quality, definitely there to balance, yet leaving a style appropriate sweetness.
Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, so soft and smooth, yet refreshing.
Overall, this is a really nice representation of the style, glad i was able to try!

"Best by 8/21/25"; drank 3/27/25 @ the Yarchives.
See-through brown/orange appearance.
An even pour yielded a small khaki head; a thick curtain of lacing remained.
Autumn leaf, mild caramel & faint spring water notes in the nose.
Medium thick mouthfeel.
Autumn leaf & mild caramel flavors; nice spring water notes on the finish.
An easy drinking dunkel with nice heft. This would be autumnal bliss.

I find this example to be everything I enjoy in a dunkel.
Pours a deep copper-bronze with a thin white head.
The taste is Pils malt with a little touch of light chocolate malt in the aftertaste.
Perfectly balanced, and incredibly drinkable.
The swivel top bottle is an added bonus for any home brewers out there, plus there's just something about cracking open a good German swivel top bottle of beer.
I highly recommend this.
I'll definitely be grabbing some more before it goes away for ever.

never seen this before in my life, actually thought it was an old novelty relic of a swing top bottle behind the bar on the shelf at the redfish lake lodge, ordered it on a prayer and to my delight it showed up to the table, not sure where this is coming in through or why it isnt anywhere else, but it was a real treat, especially after a great day on the lake and with the awesome food they serve up in this place! a chocolate colored bottle, excited pop when i push it open, high rising and fast receding off white head of big bubbles, only a few stick around, some light cloudiness to this, a little more pale and less reddish than a lot of these look, light brown fully, and fizzy. the nose is a little dusty, classically german on the grain side, not as dark as a schwarz, but not way off, minerals and old world yeast, breadiness, chestnut, soil, seems ancient and intriguing, a little different and drier side of the style than i have seen before. the flavor is nice, full and smooth to drink, definite chocolate and mellow wood notes from the malt, a kiss of smoke, very little grain sweetness which i am not used to in these, and a really timeless and subtly distinctive yeast complexion, i think thats what really sets this apart. good carbonation, some slight oxidation making it feel a little dated, but i dont hate this in german imports most of the time and its kind of flattering here, i love the packaging, and overall this is an enjoyable brew, a little different in a sometimes samey style space, id like to try some of their other flavors if they come around! so cool this place had a beer like this on their list!
