This was the first malt-beer I have tried, and I can say that I am not disappointed. When drinking Pilsen 6.0, you feel like you are drinking a real beer. "Amarga" with a taste of sweetness at the very end... definitely one of the best local beers here in Costa Rica

From a 350ml can at the Selva Verde Lodge in Costa Rica on 2 March 2026. The can is stamped on the bottom with a 15 June 2026 BB date.

Appearance. The strong point of this lager. Amber colored body with high clarity and a good white head.

The aroma has a balanced mix of grains and hops. The flavor to clearly shows the ABV. It's overly sweet up front but mildly hoppy and bitter in the aftertaste.

Please remember that this is a pilsner, not a Russian Imperial Stout, so I rated it compared to other pilsners. In a country (Costa Rica) dominated by "Imperial" brand lagers that all taste suspiciously like Coors, this beer stands head and shoulders above all but expensive imports and hard-to-find "cervesa artisenal".

As a pilsner, its clarity and carbonation are perfect. As a "doble malt", its color is noticeably amber. It is malt-forward and a bit sweet -- I'd group it with malt liquors found in the USA. Its selling point (in Costa Rica) is that it's widely available (i.e. in Walmart and most supermarkets) at 2/3 the price of imports (and I never saw craft beers on shelves).

So, if you're in Costa Rica (especially out west in touristy Tamarindo / Liberia / Arenal) and looking for tasty package beer, either pony up for something imported that you can get in any country, or ask a local guide where to find bottled/canned craft beer, or grab a six-pack of the black-canned Pilsen 6.0 at Walmart for about $6.

Bought and consumed in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. Marketed as a higher gravity version of Pilsen (still within average range in USA) this is a wholly different beer altogether. This has much more malt sweetness without becoming too cloying, a it less bite, and feels much smoother. I enjoyed this one much more than the regular Pilsen. If there is ever a choice vetween the 2, this is the way to go.

Our guide for the trip informed me that the 6.0 was the same beer but a higher ABV, all of 1% but as the choices were few and far between, I bought 2 bottles instead of a full six pack due to my utter disspointment in the regular Pilsner.

A: Poured into mini pint glass, bright shiny golden, same head and lacing as the Pilsen, finger and half and good ringed lacing on the glass.

S: The nose was almost unchanged from it's older brother, malts, grass and hops. I would call it a stadium pour if not for the head.

T: A touch hoppier than regular Pilsener, but for the most part, a untasteable creation that has more ABV.

M: Medium at first, carbonation keeps the minor flavors around but the taste dives fast.

D: I guess I was expecting too much flavor for a tropical based beer or something discernable different from the former creation. Nothing special but at least Cerveceria is pumping out new product.

I wasn't too impressed with this beer. It's overly sweet for the alcohol percentage. It's marketed as the high alcohol version of the popular Pilsen beer, but it's hardly a high gravity pilsner. Still, I like it better than the original Pilsen. It's not very common throughout the country, so it's seldom an available alternative. It may be nice on a cooler rainy day, but it's a little cloying for your average hot and humid Central American day.

I think this beer is pretty new. It wasn't in Costa Rica last January, but it was all over the place this year... had to give it a try.

Beer pours a clear gold color, nice head. A bit more color than the standard Pilsen.

Aromas are faint, some sweetness, and a touch of grain noted. But not much...

Flavors are a bit thicker when compared to the standard Pilsen, but quite similar. Noticed a more grainy sweet taste... adjuncts to boost the ABV maybe? The slight hop bite seems to be lost in this one.

Mouthfeel is a bit thick, but all in all, still pretty average.

Beer is certainly drinkable, but I prefer the original Pilsen. This seems to be a beer that is made just offer a higher ABV.
