Bottle #3 of 6 - Brewers' Intent 2017
Our brewers' creative spin on a traditional barleywine style ale - the base brew is a Rye Wine brewed with copious amounts of Rye malt. It was then put into Rye Bourbon barrels to age for 5 months. Thus, Rye Squared. This beer has a big mouthfeel, with aggressive rye spice and hop notes, nicely balanced by the barrel character.

Appearance: Pours clear and mahogany colored with a one finger ecru head; squiggles of lacing
Smell: Spicy Rye Whiskey tones, complemented by caramel, spice cake and oak notes
Taste: Caramel, spice cake and spicy rye intermingle, up front, with piney tones emerging; the Rye Whiskey barrel treatment is prominint, after the swallow, with oak and vanilla as well; well-blended flavors linger in the aftertaste
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation; warmth in the gullet
Overall: This is extraordinary and has been sitting in my cellar since my visit to the brewery several years ago; it has held up really well

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep brown with some slight reddish hues topped by a dense two finger cream colored head which retains well and leaves decent lacing
S: Smells of spicy rye, with some caramel, vanilla and oak notes. Slight pine and cinnamon so it kind of smells like christmas
T: Taste is sweet caramel and spicy rye up front with some oak and vanilla, slight pine from the hops with a little citrus rind. hints of licorice and anise as well. Swallow is more spice from the rye with some lingering caramel, vanilla, and oak from the barrel.
M: This beer has a good amount of heft with a silky and luxurious feel on the palate. Carbonation is adequate and just below prickly while the beer has a drying finish.
O: This kicks the absolute crap out of Boulevard Rye on Rye. The spicy rye flavors and the time in the barrel make this beer truly something special. Just incredible and well worth a try.
