Well I joked about it for years, but the joke came to fruition last week at the 2019 Eclipse release party.
Pours similar to most Eclipse beers, mostly black, brown head, this was a slightly thinner head than the other versions that night. Still looked good. Aroma thankfully was not a black licorice bomb. Had more of the botanical gin like thing going than licorice. Wondering if they tapered back the aging on this to not be dominated. Either way, aroma was not offputting at all, which I totally expected it would.
Same with the taste, wasn't a licorice bomb, I was actually able and willing to drink the entire pour without any problems. Wasn't as nice as a standard bourbon barrel aged Eclipse, but to be able to pull this off without being disgusting is a pretty big accomplishment in my book. Again, the botanical gin like aspect, while still small, was complimentary and slightly bigger than the ever mild licorice input going on here. Still was my least favorite Eclipse that night, but it finished light years ahead and better than expected.
