Now in its 12th vintage, 2019 Eclipse is our rich Imperial Stout aged to perfection in whiskey and spirit barrels. All Eclipse starts with the same base beer bringing hints of dark chocolate, espresso, and a smooth complexity, with each barrel treatment delivering its own unique character after a minimum of 180 days of aging. Barrel Cuvée is our brewer's bourbon blend of our longest aged barrels.

So will note I aged this a year in the cellar and I think that was a great choice, as it is still super barrel forward and strong. That feel is fascinating, really accenting the wood and booze meets medium malts that are velvet smooth, yet not overly heavy, still a sipper. Smell and taste are clones oddly enough, because there is a fair amount of complexity here: oak, bourbon, molasses, brown sugar, earth, light smoke, toasted caramel, semi-sweet chocolate and vanillin soaked additional wood. Pitch black pour with brown cap. Really appreciate a different take on the series

Pours black as ink with a 2 finger thick tan colored head that faded average to slowly, leaving really nice looking foamy rings as it went down. Much better than expected longevity in the head staying power.
Smells of milk chocolate, bourbon, molasses, espresso, burnt coffee grinds, cocoa powder, brownies, vanilla, faint piney hops, charred wood, caramel and roasted malts. A sweet aspect to the nose helps hide the ABV, but the bourbon, vanilla, char and chocolate notes are constant, dominant and quite complex.
Tastes rich with bitter bakers chocolate, burnt coffee grinds, bourbon, vanilla, brown sugar, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, warm caramel, peat moss, charred wood, smoked malts, molasses, faint piney notes and finally a combo of smoky malts and Heath Bar as it fades in the dry side. Not too sweet, and not too boozy, the smoked malts and strong chocolate aspects balanced each other out and made for another wonderful slop sipper from FiftyFifty. Mouthfeel is semi-thick with some weight to it, yet still a silky smooth feel that slides down easier then it should.

Beer review #5000 with this one!
A - Black pour w/dense toffee colored lacing and a thin layer of foamy head on top. Carbonation is little to none.
S - Roasted caramel, light char, oak, toasted cocoa, bourbon, and roasted chocolate malt.
T - Bourbon, roasted chocolate, toasted cocoa, oak tannin, and a very slight hint of fruity acidity. (Is this infected??) Nice lingering chocolate roast and oak on the palate.
M - Thick and velvety with no carbonation. Alcohol warming is kept to a minimum.
O - This is a very nice Imperial Stout but I can't get past that minimal amount undefined tartness lurking underneath.
