2020 Vintage
Appearance: Virtually black with some red undertones with a generous sized dark beige head that slowly faded. There is nothing I would change here whatsoever.
Smell: Prominent Bourbon, moderate coffee/roasted malt aromas, brown sugar and vanilla notes.
Taste: Bourbon, moderate roasted malts, vanilla, caramel/brown sugar and tannic oak notes. The flavor elements blend together seamlessly with all the elements readily discernible but no one element standing out obtrusively. The finish is mildly sweet with the Bourbon notes but the tannic oak notes and roast malts notes keep it far from being cloying. Drinks like it has nothing near 13.7% ABV.
Mouth-feel: On the light side of medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. The extended aging may have thinned the body out some but I'm okay with a flavor profile like this beer has.
Overall: Excellent beer. I'm not sure if this was aged 2 years or 4 years (there was some debate) but the smoothness and cohesiveness of the flavor profile bear witness to a significant time in the barrel. No need for adjuncts when you brew a beer like this.
