Hey someone is reviewing last year's Eclipse, might as well jump in and do that before we start launching the 2022 reviews from last Thursday night. What a snowy night!

Anyhoo, the adjuncts started rolling out a few years ago, and this is one of those beers. Diminished Eclipse as I like to say.

Pours a dark brown and black color scheme that is familiar as Eclipse. Perhaps an SRM tick lighter with the inclusion of "Mexican chocolate". I think that just means chocolate + cinnamon but we're about to find out. 1/3" lighter brown head.
Aroma goes lighter on the bourbon at the cost of getting that chocolate and cinnamon smell going. I dunno, I didn't find it here.

Taste, again, its like cutting the barrel in half at the expense at getting light cocoa powder and light cinnamon up in here. That's fine and all, but I can just add some swiss miss and a hit of cinnamon to the existing Eclipses. Nothing wrong with this one, just below average for my Eclipse experience over the years/decades now.

On tap at Frisco Taphouse in Crofton, MD. Pours pitch black with a tan head. Aroma and flavor feature dark chocolate, dark roasted malts, some light bourbon and vanilla, and a hint of cinnamon. Just a hint. Mouthfeel is on the thin side, but not watery. Overall it's a decent Mexican chocolate BBA stout but not memorable.

11-10-2023 update: On tap at Lures Bar & Grille. Not changing the ratings, but just noting that I don't get much (if any) hot pepper heat, and the booze is fairly present with some rye spiciness. Solid, but somewhat unbalanced and not quite amazing.

Nice nose, little heat and less complex taste, very thin body for a 10+% stout.

Poured from the bottle into a teku glass. Vintage 2021.

Deep nearly black with an almost fudge like consistency in color and body appearance. Opaque as can be, with a nice controlled one finger head of light tan color, and very pin point tiny bubbles. Settles to a real nice even thick collar and a whispy top and blackened ring.

Aroma is decent but lacks much barrel character. More of a dominant note of classic dark roast and pepper. Has a bit of a cherry fruit note to it, but this real doesn't come off like it's barrel aged at all on the nose which is dissapointing. There's a little lack in diversity of flavor here too.

Finally the palate wakes everything up. Real nice light velvety fudge texture and chocolate flavor. Good hits of Mexican like chocolate and heat, with still that touch of berried fruit. Finishes real nice and spicy and prickly on the tongue and back of the gullet, almost a touch wine like in flavor too. Hits a touch of oak spice with the added pepper and cinnamon really makes for a nice woody hinting stout.

Thought this was going to be a disappointment, turned out way better than I expected. I expect nothing less from this series, it has never disappointed me.

2021 batch.

Pours a dark brown with moderate carbonation and a one finger head of foam. Aroma is bourbon, cinnamon, with whiskey and chocolate mixed together. Taste is smooth, complex with cinnamon and whiskey predominant, followed by chocolate and cayenne. The heat is subdued and is blended nicely with the other flavors -- one is not suppressing the others. Vanilla, if it exists, is quite subtle. All in all, a nicely blended beer.

2021 Vintage

Appearance: Very dark brown bordering on black with a medium-sized, dark, beige head that gradually faded. A good-looking Stout.

Smell: Whiskey aromas, moderate brown sugar aromas, moderate vanilla notes, and faint cinnamon. So far so good.

Taste: Moderate whiskey notes, mild cinnamon notes, moderate pepper notes w/ a bit of heat, roasted malt notes, brown sugar, and mild chocolate, vanilla and tannic oak notes. The flavor elements are noticeable individually, but they are all integrated nicely. The beer starts with a bit of sweetness and pepper heat, but the roasted malts and tannic oak notes dry the beer out resulting in a fairly dry finish.

Mouth-feel: On the light side of medium-bodied with a moderate level of carbonation.

Overall: An interesting Eclipse variant. The different flavor elements are nicely integrated, and the beer has a tasty flavor profile.
