2012 bottle poured into a snifter. Pours rich dark brown with feignt and quickly fading head. Smell is vanilla, chocolate, cola, bourbon, oak, bit of raisin. Taste follows suit, but the bourbon and honey shine through here. Mouth is relatively thin for the style and mildly carbonated. All in all a solid and highly drinkable take on the style.

A - Dark. Black. Opaque. = Yep, it's a stout. Micro-thin toffee colored lacing .

S - Cocoa and light toffee.

T - Charred toffee, roasted chocolate sweetness, oak, and some vanilla.

M - Heavy medium body, silky feel, no carbonation, some booze effervescence.

O - Nice barrel aged stout.

650ml bottle, 2012 vintage, poured into a FiftyFifty Eclipse snifter.

The beer pours a nice deep jet black color, moderately thick, but not super viscous with a thin finger of khaki head that dissipates quickly leaving only a thin layer of film around the circumference of the glass and a few spots of lace behind. The aroma is quite nice, caramel, chocolate, soft bourbon, sweet oak and charred barrel, vanilla, roasted grain, and light stone fruit, nicely complex, smooth balance with little to no alcohol heat. The flavors are in line, loads of caramel, marshmallow, chocolate, vanilla, quite rich but with nice charred wood, earthy oak, spicy bourbon that brings out some toffee notes and provides nice contrast to the lingering stone fruit. The mouthfeel is typical of many Eclipse beers, a bit lacking of substance and viscosity, the body is a bit thinner though there isn't much in the way of prickly carbonation and it coats well though it hampers the finish which is a tad weak.

Verdict: A very, very nice barrel aged stout that has aged quite gracefully. It's obvious that the Eclipse line of stouts have earned their status and are worthy of praise and this variant definitely holds it own with some of the best. I've long felt that time goes a long way with these beers and this is another solid example of why.

2013 blue wax. Tastes a lot like Town Hall's Czar Jack. Maybe a little thinner however. Still, a lot of oak, vanilla, and whiskey flavors. Very flavorful.

2012 batch poured into a snifter.

A- Pours almost black in color with just a little bit of carbonation. The small amount of head is basically just a rim on the top of the body of tan bubbles. Lacing is minimal.

S- Huge, sweet and boozy barrel notes are first and foremost on the nose. Tons of caramel and spicy oak are the primary barrel notes. Some mild bitter notes from the malt comes through next, but a majority of the scent is in the barrel flavors.

T- Starts off with a combo punch of the barrel and bitter malts from the scent. The malts are much more prominent than in the smell. The barrel sweetness is quickly overtaken from its original dominance by these malts and a nice, burnt, roasted flavor comes to the forefront for the middle and latter parts of the drink. This malt flavor presides until the end, when a touch of oak and bourbon bitterness ramp up to take over a little bit. Lingering flavor is fairly bitter in a burnt and boozy way.

M- This beer is smooth and rather thick, like a good stout should be. I suspect that most of the reason for low carbonation levels is the age of the bottle, but it actually benefits from the smooth feel it provides.

Overall, this is a very good barrel aged stout that is a little past its prime. The barrel has held up well in the scent, but the taste of the beer has skewed back towards bitter malts and away from the barrel. Still, this is a solid stout.

Think I got this in trade from my sister, like three years ago. A month or two afterward I realized how this beer was outrageously expensive and therefore miraculously easier to find outside of California.

Blue wax, 2012. It says "BR 1," whatever that means.

Pours out quickly, a little thin-seeming, with nice opacity and a decent head.

Smells as much like straight up bourbon as any other BA stout I've ever had. Often, "bourbon" denotes nodes of fire or vanilla. But this smells like barrel-aged sour mash smoothed out by chewy barley and yeast. One of the most aggressive aromas I've ever come across in a a beer, and also one of the best.

Tastes... not nearly as good as the smell. Ahh blazes why'd you have to go an' do that me, love?

Tastes up front like the thinnest stout you ever had. You can sense inklings of better things, but it's like they're knocking against a locked door. This gives way to a rather generic bourbon burn and leads to a fantastic finish, firework puffs of vanilla, char, and vinous barley.

This is infuriating! It's like 93% a classic but that weak, watery opening keeps it away from glory.

Been sitting on this one for a while - 2012 version. Dark oily pour into a Duvel tulip - short lasting head. Smell is chocolate, marshmallow, vanilla, dark cherries and oak. Taste is extremely chocolately and marshmallow-y, alcohol is present but not overbearing. Also more dark fruit/cherries on the tongue. Feel is smooth, oily but not cloying. Overall a great beer but the price prevents me from buying on a more regular basis (paid 30 bucks). Cheers!
