A Williamsburg collaboration, Red Rye IPA is debuted at the food and Virginia beer festival, Whistle Belly. 'Alewerks Brewing Company is proud to partner with The Virginia Beer Company to produce a beer in celebration of Williamsburg's burgeoning craft beer scene. Our collaborative Red Rye IPA will debut at DoG Street Pub's Whistle Belly on August 2, and will be available locally thereafter. This unique IPA is built on a foundation of spicy rye, luscious crystal, pale, and a touch of roasted malt, while also featuring one of the brewing industry's newer hop varieties, named ‘Azacca’. Expect this hop to bring notes of mango, papaya, pineapple and citrus to the beer's overall flavor and aroma profile,' says Geoff Logan, Brewmaster at Alewerks Brewing Company. 'At Alewerks, we welcome our new brewing brethren to the local craft beer scene and are excited about working together for many years to come!

Cask pour in a nonic, the beer is a hazed, rusty orange coloring with a creamy, dense, foamy, off white jead. Aromas of grapefruit, spicy and bitter grains, and subtle caramel notes. Flavors are bitter forward, both rye and hops resin, with a quick follow of grapefruit, melon, orange rind, and pinapple. Hints of roast character combine with caramel and chocolate to balance out. Smooth, creamy body, with a bitter and citrus aftertaste. Smooth, dry finish, with a resinous hops linger. Unique take on an IPA.

Reddish Brown in color with a great 2-3 finger head and decent, spotty lacing. Aroma has a bit of floral along with sweet malts and hops coming through. Taste is not overly hoppy, and the malt, slight yeasty essence and hops blend and balance well in this new brew.

This is a collaboration with Williamsburg AleWerks (the only other brewery in Williamsburg, VA at this time).
The official release was at a beerfest where I first tried it but I had this again last night for IPA Day to give it a more fair and honest shake.
Pours a nice crimson with a tight offwhite head. Not crystal clear but only a slight haze.
Nose is really subtle, bit of bread, yeast and malt come through.
Flavor is more pronounce. Malt, rye, bit of spice. Hop is in great balance, adds a nice floral bitter to counter the sweeter malt. Finish is dry and clean. I've heard from others who have tried more of their beer and consistently hear that "clean finish" is one of their trademarks. This holds true to that.
Great first entry - can't wait to try more from these guys.
