2019 version that was Bourbon and Port Barrel aged. Bottled at purchased at ...
I have not tried earlier versions and unsure if this is a new approach or update on similar annual treatments.
Regardless it is a delightful sipper. Largely dark with accents dark cherry to light. Quickly fading head likely due to abv, has a lovely tan residue on surface and lingering halo and lacing. Nose is very full with figs, dates and currants. Oak noted with some bourbon more port. Flavor magnifies all of this and is remarkably delicious. Some dark cherry shows up amidst the dried fruit. The port is notable but bourbon is (in this case) admirably restrained. Both barrels present but complementary not dominant.
The mouthfeel is just about perfect for the style. Waves of gently bright carbonation... not foam like; but definitely not harsh . Brightens a slightly pleasant creamy syrupy body. It elevates the the taste to tongue with very gentle sparkling. I’ve rarely found this accomplished state side ... if at all. Superb for what could be heavy and full, is instead opened up and revealed.
I like Alewerks and have enjoyed a few truly well made brews at times. This Jubillee XIII however is a truly excellent beer. Sublime sipper that demands fine cheeses, perhaps walnuts and earthy bread or crackers.
