This is a version of the beer sold at Colonial Williamsburg with an old print-style label. There is a date on the bottle: "12/06/2022"
Appearance: The body is black and it has a light tan colored large head which is both fluffy and creamy textured. The beer has good head retention but it drops to a more medium-size. No real lacing.
Aroma: The beer has a bit of a charred wood aroma mixed with pine and dark chocolate. The overall aroma is fairly strong and good.
Taste: Up front there is a bit of a charred flavor. Towards the middle there is a light bit of wood and a bit of cocoa powder. There is some mineral flavor as it approaches the back of the mouth. Some coffee cherry in the aftertaste with some lingering char.
Mouthfeel: The body feels a bit thin and there is a light charred bitterness to the beer.
Overall: It's an alright beer. Primarily the beer focuses on this smokey, charred-like flavor which feels a bit monotone in contrast with its more lively aromatic component. It also feels a bit light when it comes to the body. It is drinkable and there are nice elements to the beer but it feels like a puzzle that is missing just enough pieces to make it too annoying to enjoy. I probably wouldn't buy it again but I might try it again in the future to see if it improves.
