Picked up some bottles at the German discount supermarket Lidl in Frankfurt German. Price was really low, especially for a beer imported from the Czech Rep., at €0.65 for a 0.5L bottle. That price point is on bar with some of the worst mass market beers on offer in Germany; thus, I picked up a bottle to see if was swill, just a decent Czech, or better than that.
Look: Typical Pils colors of clear yellow with orange tinges under a snow white head.
Aroma: Lots of sweet Pils malt, strong bready, toasty, subtle Saaz or other Noble hops lurking in their, but not too strong. Not bad.
Taste: Round, strong herbal but very pleasant bitterness up front, sweetness of a Pils, too. Middle you have more bitterness, but quite complex bitterness. So far, so good. In the back is that sweet, honey on toast sweetness of the Pilsner malt. Yum. But it's in the back where you also get a harsh bitterness that's hoppy but also rather phenolic, which gives it an astringent alcohol bitterness in the aftertaste. The beer was pretty good up until the aftertaste. Well, bottle says 6%, 14°Plato, so I'm guessing a few weeks more lagering would have done away with that.
Mouthfeel: It has that soft, round, lovely, thick feel of a typical Czech Pils. Best part maybe.
Overall: It's exactly what you want in a Czech Pilsner, but only up to a point. The extra alcohol gives it a kick but also needed more time to mature, IMO. Very good/more than decent Czech beer for the price in Germany. I'll definitely buy more but I won't expect my world to be rocked.
