In the old AKH, look for the building fully inside the courtyard in the northwest corner.

Located on what is basically one of the quads of the Wien University (site of an old hospital), I think this a pretty unique place for a beer.
They have an large beer garden and then a more formal space in the restaurant. They also have an Austrian mountain cabin that you can rent out for special events.
They had about 5 beers on tap during my visit. Service was friendly and quick.
We had an appetizer and then split a main course. Food was very good.
It is about a 25 minute walk from the central tourist area, I thought it was well worth it as you get to walk through some neat neighborhoods.

I want to counter the review written by johndawsonaustin with some positive notes on the Stiegl Ambulanz.
It is housed in the park within the Altes AKH (Old General Hospital). This is really a landmark in the center of Vienna, so it shouldn't be very hard to find. There is a university there which lends to a laid-back, youthful vibe in the park, and there is also a nice playground there so one sees many young families as well. Outside it has a nice open beer garden in the warm months, and the Altes AKH holds one of Vienna's Christmas markets during the month of December. This is my favorite Christmas market in the city because it is not too touristy and crowded.
The Stiegl Ambulanz is right across from the Universitätsbräuhaus, so one could hop between the two breweries pretty easily.
Stiegl is a large Austrian brewery based out of Salzburg and this is their satellite brew-pub in Vienna. They have brewing equipment there, which I would assume they use. I find their pils to be one of the best in Austria. I'm not a huge fan of the style, but I recognize that this is a good one. Recently, Stiegl has been experimenting with new styles of beer. I had a chocolate stout from them a few days ago which was surprisingly decent. It was definitely designed as not to be too challenging, but it did have some character and it was a good representation of the style. I feel like this is the beer which could introduce a lot of people in Austria to craft beer.
That being said, I can't guarantee that they will always have special beers on offer at the Ambulanz. It seems to be an occasional monthly special. Sometimes they offer some other special beers with herbs or specialty grains like emmer, spelt and black wheat, but I haven't tried them. Herbed beer seems to be a trend in central Europe. Please note that often times they only have the helles.
Service is terrible, but that is standard in Vienna. The potato wedges are amazing. They also sell huge pretzels.

Tricky to find, and dissapointing when you do.
The address would lead you to think that this place was on the main street. As you head out from the centre of Wien along Alserstrasse, there is a large building on the right that looks like a museum. About in the centre you will find a gateway through into a courtyard. Stiegl Ambulanz is in a building within the courtyard, across from the Alserstrasse entrance and a bit to the left.
Once inside there are lots of comfortable leather sofas and chairs to lounge on, and in the centre is the main bar, and what looks to be brewing equipment. My german wasn't good enough to ask if that was the real thing, but it had a fake quality about it.
They only had the one hausbier, which was a sort of bland blonde. Great if your thirsty, but a dissappointment after a visit to the Siebensternbräu.
We had some local style food, which was very average.
It was Easter, and the Staff brought around soume painted eggs for the customers. A nice touch, but it will not send me running back there.
