appearance: I'm given the beer in a pint glass with a low, white head that soon disappears. The beer itself is a deep amber in color.
smell: Leafy caramel and toffee upfront, moderately sweet. Nice, earthy fall aromas and a moderate noble hop character.
mouthfeel: The carbonation is low and the body medium. Besides being undercarbonated, the mouthfeel is nice.
taste: Moderately sweet leafy caramel flavors at first followed by toffee and toast after the swallow. Notes of chestnut are found. The hop flavor is average in strength for the style. A light bitterness lingers for awhile with some sweet earthy flavors.
drinkability: pretty easy

growler, courtesy of that Greensboro lad, the smoked porter gent, thanks to him..
Clear and amber in hue, nice, if thin, cap of beigish foam..okey-doke..
big, fat maltiness in the nose, huge sweetness, lush fruit, herbal, pumpkinny, fresh and pleasant as it gets.
Taste: nice and toasty, sweet, but beginning to dry on the palate, medium bodied, medium finish. Some spiciness, too, in the flavor, a hint of cinnamon. Not such a rich Oktoberfest as someone like me would prefer, but it's smooth and tasty. I can easily imagine downing these with gusto at the pub. Very flavorsome, if not terribly complex...pretty durned good.

There is some mild spiciness to the aroma and flavor. Some caramel to the flavor, but a rather unexciting example of an octoberfest. It wasn't the worst of the Octoberfest beers at Brewgrass in Asheville, NC, but it was far from the best.
