Double Hop

Draught at Plan B, Copenhagen. Hazy brown colour. Oak, raisins, rye bread and caramel in the aroma. Flavour is moderately oaky with raisins, fairly sweet (too sweet?), decent hops.

A: The beer is hazy orange-yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high off white head that died down, leaving a large patch of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of tangerines are present in the nose along with notes of yeast and hints of funk.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has flavors of orange and tangerine citrus along with a light amount of associated bitterness from the hops and notes of yeast and funk towards the finish. No alcohol is perceptible.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer seemed extremely light-bodied compared to other Imperial IPAs and seemed to be more like a cross between an IPA, Saison, and Wild Ale.

Rating beers are hard, it's a relative scale!! And unless, if you've had them all, you could never be certain.


First is the citrus(y) hops, without the forward bitterness, followed by a cheesy sour yeast. Overall the beer is sweet. This is a truly unique blend of properties, one would have to taste it to know it. The pour is beautiful, the head is thick, off white, but not plentiful. The best is light cannot penetrate this beer, this one has SOUL!!

The only downfall, just as I was beginning to enjoy, the bottle came to an end. It wasn't love at first sip, but one you grow with.

i wouldn't recommend for people that expect a DIPA by standard american palate means.

this is more driven by english yeast and an interesting, for lack of a better term, sahti note. this was an older but still robust bottle. beer is malt dynamic but dry. light amber with a nice white head. nose pops complex ester of asian pear and juniper berries. nice orange with a juniper dry twig ending, hence the sahti, and a very well balanced bitter with a finish that lasts well past the sip. very well made, and with its own unique voice. fantastic with lamb, duck, and lebonese kebab.

 

 

A- Dark golden color with a thick, fine-textured white head.

S- A simple and straightforward but clean, fresh, sweet, and lemony aroma with just a touch of citrus hops.

T- Sweet maltiness and a lemony finish. Free of astringency and bitterness. Delightfully restrained on the hops; I like its style.

M, D- The very mixed reviews here attest to extreme variability, but I found this Wintercoat fresh, clean, and quite drinkable.

Let this warm a bit out of the fridge. And drat, I think it might have turned. Poured with a slightly thick and creamy, cream to light tan head that slowly settled and some lace. Color is a clear medium amber. Aroma is yeast, funk, with just a slight bit of hop. Flavor is funk, sour sweet, chemical and basically undrinkable. Body is soft and full with good carbonation. Finish is too long even though it's not that long.. I was looking forward to this. What a disappointment!

Pours a cloudy golden reddish body with a large head and lace. A smooth hoppy aroma and a touch of grape and sweetfruit, the fruits being that strong. A dry but easy to drink beer, not as hoppy as most DIPAs and has a somewhat mellow malty sweetness. Medium body, slightly smooth, there are minimal citric and grapefruit flavors in this beer as well for a balanced, low key in terms of hops DIPA. Not exactly what I'm looking for when I think of hoppy DIPAs but a good beer nonetheless.

Poured on tap at Pizza Paradiso Dupont into a tumbler.

A cloudy burnt brown/yellow head is presented sitting on an orange/brownish murky looking body. The head falls slowly leaving some decent lacing, but this body color doesn't really do it for me.

Oh dear god... what is going on with that bouquet? Seriously are you messing with me? Strangely first sour orange and acidic, mealy, then the aroma that takes over and doesn't go away... are you screwing with me? This is cheese. Big time, I am talking goat cheese, pungent, blue fungus bent, borderline Stilton strong. I love cheese. I do not want my beer to SMELL like it.

Taste brings the weirdness. Good lord are you messing with me? Goaty and not a barnyard saison funky way either I am talking goat cheese, fungus bent blue cheese, mold, MILDEW, seriously overpowering EVERYTHING in my palate, I am talking you want to spread this on a cracker cheese. Where is the hops, malt, ANYTHING that would resemble... I dunno a Double IPA??? I'll give it a good body and feel that's for sure, it feels like goat cheese in a bottle. Good lord give me some other TASTE anything I beg you, and I could actually have some fun here!

Overall this is one of the biggest, most giant WTF beers I have had in my life. I am not sure what the hell happened here, but that cheese bent is ridiculously DOMINANT. As I said before, I love good cheese, I buy goat cheese and pungent bent cheeses all the time often from all over. But this is not fun or enjoyable to me at all to drink a liquid form, it's borderline almost undrinkable... serious pass for me, unless maybe matching with a plate of cheeses so I couldn't tell the difference. Giant skip this.

Strange brew this one...

Appearance: Nice orange/amber color with sizeable layer of white foamy head.

Aroma: I'm clearly picking up a bit of yeasty funk... quite strange.

Taste: DEFINITE and STRONG funky/sour flavor dominates. I'm not sure if this is infected or old (it was a gift), but it certainly tastes nothing like any other DIPA I've ever had... very odd. My girlfriend LOVES sours and she is thoroughly enjoying this one...

Mouthffeel & Drinkability : tart flavor makes it a bit hard to drink for me, but the mouthfeel is nice - somewhat smooth & creamy.

Had a 750ml of this while watching the Hokies beat the Hurricanes. Poured into a tulip glass. I'd never heard of the beer but picked it up at Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg a couple of weeks ago, so I had no expectations for it.

Pour revealed an orange colored beer with a little bit of haze to it. The smell was surprisingly mild for my expectations given the style of beer. The citrus hop smell was there, though a bit subdued. The hop taste matched the smell--a bit more subtle than I might have expected. There is definitely a great deal of citrus hop flavor--mainly orange--that had just a touch of funk to it, though it didn't seem like it was the yeasty flavor you'd expect from Brett. It's a light-to-medium bodied beer with a fairly smooth mouthfeel. All in all a pretty drinkable beer, but alittle disappointing for what was supposed to be a Belgian style IPA. But still a very good beer.

Had on-tap at the Quarry House in Silver Spring.

This was an interesting beer. It looks standard enough, orange with a soapy head, but the smell and taste are a whole different ball game. My main impression of this beer was "orange juice" because of the very orange-y citrus flavor, the strangely medicinal honey notes and the spicy alcohol. The Belgian yeast is definitely there but is hard to enjoy next to that weird off-note citrus. I also found the mouthfeel harsh.

I clearly didn't enjoy this beer, but I could imagine that someone else might.

appearance: served in a small chalice - bright/hazy orange body, light off-white head

smell: strongly hopped, spicy yeast, citrus - orange, grapefruit

taste: Very interesting - starts very hoppy with a huge citrus punch, then comes the yeast and tons of belgian sugar and kind of a spicy finish. Scandanavia knows what's up.

mouthfeel: piercing hops, strong alcohol, spicy finish

drinkability: ok

Served from a cask at Jack's Bistro in Baltimore, MD into a 12oz. goblet at the appropriate temperature (06/20/2010).

A: Pours slightly murky light golden straw brown capped with one finger of an off-white head that is extremely creamy.

S: Not at all what I was expecting as this guy smells quite sweet with just a hint of earthy/herbal hops.

T: Sweets grains(?) hit the palate first with just a hint of citrus. Not really getting any hop bitterness to speak of, but the malt is certainly interesting.

M: Best part of the beer by far as it is extremely thick and creamy with low carbonation. Really enjoyed this aspect of the beer.

D: The sweetness really got to me with this one.

Overall this was very interesting DIPA, but I'm feeling that perhaps this was not the freshest possible pour. Certainly not a bad beer and the mouthfeel made up for some of it shortcomings, but I can't necessarily recommend this beer.

On-cask at CCB at the Whole Foods cask shindig.

It is possible that this brew I am reviewing was treated with a Whisky- or Scotch-barrel conditioning, because it tastes like Jameson or something smoky-alcoholic.

A - It pours a copper hazy hue, unsurprising considering its cask, with a little patch of foam.

S - I detect some smoke and booze and an unusual hop profile or combination immediately. Sweet amber malt and booze then become apparent, with the booze still carrying a smoky essence.

T -The flavor is strongly booze, particularly Scotch. The malt is sweet, but it is tamed by the smoky liquor flavor which even supersedes a dynamically pungent but outgunned citric-centric hop. The hop has some serious bitterness, but the flavor dynamics seem subtle in comparison to the alcohol. Still, I find this to be a good and enjoyable beer. Strong and way out of balance; rife with unusual flavor, but still pleasant enough in a rugged sort of way.

M - The cask flatness is perhaps responsible for the overwhelming lingering of the booze. I'm not sure if that's bad or good.

D - Like it or hate it. Not good enough to be love it or hate it. I like it.

Served a slightly brownish amber color, and was surprising clear for being cask ale. This beer has a wonderful fruity hop aroma with plenty of malt sweetness as well. Citrus hops seem to be at the forefront of the aroma, but I also detect some interesting berry like aromas. The flavor is very similar to the aroma in that it has a citrus hop character with grapefruit and orange zest, but faintly in the background I am also picking up what seems to be blueberry or blackberry flavors. Very interesting and quite delicious. Strong caramel malt backbone that seems perfectly balanced with a very smooth bitterness. This beer also has a definite earthy quality that comes out in the finish. Medium body with a nice balanced finish. I could drink many of these, and was shocked to find out it is 8% so be careful. This is a beer that I would seek out to have again.

Nice moldy DIPA, rich hoppiness with some funk.

Presentation: 10 oz draft serving. Menu notes style, country, serving temp (48º), and Alc. by Vol. (8.2%). Served in a snifter.

A - Deep amber pour with minimal head, faint retention and the slightest of surface memories.

S - Nice nose, not too assertive, with fruity and hoppy notes and a hint at the subsequent funk.

T - Earthy hoppiness, slightly funky layer over citrus, resin and a soft fruity range.

M - Medium body with short carbonation, and a slightly biting end.

D - Works well as a mid-range DIPA with a stimulating earthy range.

Notes: Nice serving, felt like good quality but the experience is very diverging from the average review of this brew. Hmmm, sure one worth revisiting elsewhere to find out the reason behind the contrast...
