Kongens Fadebur Julebryg is a Christmas brew that tastes and smells sweet and spicy like a Christmas market during the time when Christian III ruled from Nyborg Castle in the period 1534-1559. At that time, Kongens Fadebur had to be available with hundreds of wagon loads of food for the king's big Christmas parties - especially beer was served in large quantities.

Kongens Fadebur Julebryg is a chestnut brown Brown Ale brewed with both barley and wheat malt and, in addition to hops, spiced with prune puree, cloves and fennel and added a little extra sugar in the form of organic cane sugar, to make it really good, full-bodied, warming and sweet to withstand the cold weather.

Kongens Fadebur Julebryg is one of several beers developed in a collaboration between Ørbæk Bryggeri and Nyborg Castle.

Best enjoyed with: Because Kongens Fadebur Julebryg is such a full-bodied beer, it goes particularly well with the fattier Christmas food such as roast pork, Christmas duck and turkey. It is also good with the sweet table with chocolate, confectionery and glazed apples.

Copenhagen 22/10 2016. 75 cl bottle from SuperBrugsen, Platanvej, Kbh. V. Good old Santa making his way with big bags of toy on the label. First Christmas beer of the season - in October (sigh). But this one should be just like the King liked it in 16th century (double sigh).

Pours dark amber with a reddish tinge and an off-white head. Settles as a thin layer of foam. Moderate lacing on the side of the glass.

Aroma is sweet and of fermented fruit, brown sugar, prunes and slightly metallic.

Light carbonation and slightly thick palate. Lightly tingling texture.

Flavor is heavily sweet and sugary. Only light bitterness.

I know Christmas beer is supposed to be sweet - but this one is on the verge of overdoing it.
