Umami is one of the 5 basic tastes that the human sense of taste can detect. It has been translated into English as ‘savory’, or ‘velsmag’ in Danish.

Umami is a Japanese word, and was discovered by Kikunae Ikeda, a Japanese researcher, as early as 1908. Since then, various scientists have lively debated whether Umami should function on the same level as salt, sour, sweet and bitter. But in 1985 it was finally accepted that the human tongue can identify 5 different basic tastes, including Umami.

Copenhagen 5/8 2016. 50 cl bottle from Meny, Østerfælled Torv, Kbh. Ø. Light green label with the Japanese professor who discovered Umami. Looks like a savory fellow. A part of Meny Ølvalg (beer competitions seems to be the rage in Denmark).

Pours slightly hazy, pale yellow with a white head. Stable. Settles as a 0,5 cm thick layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Substantial lacing on the side of the glass.

Aroma is not very strong. Some nuts and sour tart berries and something undefinable which does not exactly strike me as truffles.

Soft carbonation and thick creamy palate. Almost flat texture.

Flavor has a light sweetness followed by a quite acrid bitterness. The bitterness lingers in the aftertaste.

More sour than "Umami" - and I did not quite catch the truffels.
