Courtesy of the super-generous brewer, Barley Chung. Having tasted the "test brew" version yesterday, it is time to reveal how different this improved regular product can be. This is brewed to the style of "California Common Ale", using lager yeasts but brewed at a higher temperature. According to Barley, this one uses the same beer base for Takau Pilsener, hence anticipated difference in flavour from the Pale-Ale-based test brew. Coming in a 350ml can, unfiltered and unpasteurised. Packaged on 17/10/07, BB 17/12/07, served lightly chilled in Harvey's straight pint glass.
A: slightly murky amber in colour, coming with a hissing white foam that dissipates in five seconds... carbonation is mixed, consisting slow-floating tiny fizziness and rocketing large bubbles.
S: a sticky note of caramel malts with a touch of calcium pills, vanilla powder, and raw-ish nutty amber malts presents upfront, while a lighter tinge of piney hops and estery fragrance serve as a softer gloss. Overall, the aroma is somewhat lacking a focus, and the fragrant esters and hoppiness are sadly short-lived.
T: upfront comes a sparkling-textured fruity maltiness, like an English amber bitter, followed by a bitter-sweet edge of caramel, piney hops, and faintly dirty-cloth at the back... leaving a rather thin, prune-ish sour-sweetness in the short finish. The key ingredient, local longan-flower honey, makes a very faint appearance overall. Also interestingly, despite its low alc. content, the beer gives a rather assertive hint of alcohol at the end of tasting...
M&D: the mouthfeel remains softly-sparkling throughout, hence soothing and refreshing to go with the light body; the balance, however, is the weakest link here, with an assertive entry of fruity malts unbalanced with an ill-structured aftertaste, in need of either more hop bitterness or a heavier malty/chocolatey undernote to steer the way. All in all, not a bad attempt this is, but I'm sure the adventurous Barley Chung will surely improve the recipe again in the near future!
