A black IPA aged in bourbon barrels. Was wondering if it would work, but it does. Jet black pour. Vanilla, bourbon and oak on the nose. Oak and roasted malt on the tongue with a touch of piney-hop bitterness give way to additional vanilla and bourbon notes. Impressive offering from Big Boss.

Part of the "Strange Cargo" series, this was a pleasant surprise. The base beer seems to be robust enough to hold up to and benefit from the barrel aging process, which does not always seem to be the case when it seems like sometimes breweries will just throw anything into a barrel. Nice vanilla-y bourbon notes (not just extra booze), but the roastiness and hoppiness of the base beer still present. Never had the base beer, but this one is good enough to satisfy my occasional BBA cravings, and at a fairly reasonable price point.
