a: Served in an 8 oz. glass with a good 1" of thick mocha head on top. A slow very recession leaves a nice layer, but lacing is disappointing. The beer is an oily black in color.
s: Not as much here as in the flavor, but very well balanced. Smooth, dark malt with underlying notes of astringent roast and subtle Belgian yeast. Chocolate is minimal, but a light dusting is found.
m: Expected low carbonation coupled with a full body gives an extraordinarily silky mouthfeel.
t: A nice stout body, on the side of smooth roasts rather than bitter, with a light Belgian yeast note. Starts out with a tempered sweetness, black Euro malts and just a touch of Semisweet chocolate. The lightly astringent roasted malt comes in after the swallow, giving notes of coffee with some papery hops. Some Belgian yeast comes out in the finish with a light-moderate bitterness.
d: Gives the buzzed feeling of a moderate-high abv beer, but no alcohol is found on the nose or tongue.
Aged on Valrona chocolate, rather than brewed with it. Labeled by Big Boss as a "Belgian Black Ale". More of an American Stout than a Belgian Dark or Strong Dark, so I went with that.
