Had this on tap at the new Tyler's Taproom in Apex NC

A: Very little head (which is typical of Tyler's) on top of a brownish-red brew.

S: Very little aroma... I hate to mark down a good beer, but I found nothing noteworthy in the nose.

T: Sweet malts with notes of burnt caramel, raisin and a strong showing from the oak. Very little hop bitterness ... almost too little.

M: The lack of hops left the beer a bit on the cloying side... a little thick on the tongue.

D: It's a good beer. It would accompany grilled/smoked foods really well.

On-tap at Horniblow's Tavern.

Pours much darker than expected, with a deep mahogany hue capped by a thin, khaki head. Retention is decent, but lacing lacks a bit. Aroma is decidedly woody, with notes of toffee malts, nuttiness, and dank fruits.

The flavor really brings the fruitiness, with an excellent profile of plum, raisin, and fig. The best taste descriptor I could come up with is "musky" for this beer. "Like sipping your grandma's attic", said one of my friends. The oak-aging doesn't pull through as much as I had anticipated, but it definately gives this beer a quirkiness that works for both its flavor and mouthfeel. Speaking of mouthfeel, the body is on the light side of thick with a low carbonation level and excellent bitter finish. Overall, this probably isn't one of Big Boss' better beers, but considering the consistent quality of the brews they release, Wooden Monkey is still a winner.

Pint glass on tap at Tyler's in Durham. Served a nice dark almost black with a thin head that diminishes to a ring. Aroma is a decent amount of oak along with dried fruits and hint of molasses. The taste is a wonderful blend of Belgian flavors such a candi sugar and spice against subtle Belgian yeast and a moderate, almost undertoned oak. The beer is medium bodied but still smooth and refreshing. This is yet another wonderful beer from the guys at Big Boss.

a: Dark brown in color with decent retention of the off-white head.

s: Smells nice. Predominantly dark tree fruits and candied malts. Oak presence is minimal.

m: Full, smooth mouthfeel with a high-medium level of carbonation

t: Similar to the smell, with flavors of dark candied malts and various concentrated tree fruits (think figs, maybe dates). Even less oak presence than on the nose...barely detectable, if at all.

d: A nice beer for sure, just wish it had more oak presence
