Tasted this beer by a pint at my local JDW pub, East End London, during Wetherspoon's Autumn Beer Festival three weeks ago. The beer itself is said to be brewed to an old recipe of Young's Winter Warmer which has died out some decades ago. Now it's back to the production line and I've heard that quite a many followers of Young's really look forward to the revival of this beer. Lucky to have it at my local JDW, and from the appearance it's really really fresh indeed...
A: light copper hued with strong caramel hint, a thin, 1cm, off-white head is produced but extremely tight and ever-lasting, leaving capuccino-like lacing, frothy and creamy~~ moderately carbonated.
S: dark malts and herbal hops, with a quite dryish note upfront; dark fruitiness, X'mas pudding-like spiced fruitiness and a touch of coconut reveal at the back. Overall the nose is quite pleasantly malty and preserved-fruity.
T: lots of caramel, licorice, and spices mixed with dark/crystal malts, backed by a flat-fruity flavour of dried berries and raisins, lending a slightly tart fruitiness to otherwise rich, crystal malty overtone; the malty flavour is ever so intense and underlyingly rich, at times a bit sticky, but retaining a refreshing texture on balance. The aftertaste has more caramel maltiness and dark fruity hint on top of a lingering herbal and earthy, dryish bitterness, with a mildly nutty ending note.
D: juicy and malty at the same time, this is a full-bodied strong ale with complexity. Personally I find the slightly herbal-tea like bitterness at the back the most pleasant element which makes it even extremely quaffable for me! Strongly recommended!!
