I am a fan of all of Franconia Notch beers but for some reason this year the Mountain Stout seems to be exceptionally good. I don't know if they altered the recipe or not but it has a chocolate and dark roasted coffee overtone in both aroma and flavor that is addictive to say the least. The cascading head stays around for a good long while when served on tap and the color is not your typical opaque Guiness sort, it glows with a brown hue that I like personally. Whatever they have done... if anything, I hope they continue it. Highest marks for this stout!

It's worth a taste for curiosity's sake, that's for sure. Overall, a sweet, nutty porter-like stout when cask conditioned.
Head receded quickly as the big natural bubbles popped atop a mahogany-to-black brew. The smell was warm and enticing, loaded with coffee, cake and brown bread. Malty charachter predominates. Cask-conditioned mouthfeel is more like a pale or bitter, with no notrogen or oily Imperial qualities.
Enjoyable (wish I was at the Coat of Arms for dessert rather than snacks... it didn't complement curry at all) and curious, but not necessarily recommended to stout fans.
