606th Review on BA
Bottle to Mug
22oz

Thanks to a vendor of mine for sending this bottle tomme while HE was on vacation.

App- A very dark yellow with some gold, amber highlights. Big puffy two finger head that only leaves a slight bit of cling. Head falls as you sip on this one.

Smell- Much more piney hops than I thought. A nice soft malt character mixed with a touch of citrus.

Taste- Its very soft and almost a bit dry but that's okay. Its a very average beer for me as I really feel this is past its prime. I get a malty/faded hops with a little bit of off center dampness or soapy quality.

Mouth- Medium bodied and Medium/High carbonation. Again leaves that weird malt/soap taste.

Drink- Again, most of these reviews have been free beers from a buddy so he didnt know any better. I liked the color, head and feel of this beer for what it tried to be, just a bit short.

Light amber color and clear. Decent head with low retention and little lace. Medium carbonation. Honey aroma. Very soft front for a bottled beer. Light caramel/honey sweetness through the middle with a hint of bitterness on the back end. Medium mouthfeel.

A fabulous find on a lengthy, winding road-trip from Iowa to Flagstaff (before a shorter road-trip back to LA)...

Tried a sampler and although the bock and maibock were ok, the rest of the beers were a bit "meh" aside from the porter, and this lil gem.

Picked up a bottle (all of their regular beers were available in growler or in bombers) to refresh my memory when I got home, and here we go...

Described on the bottle as: "A top fermented golden colored "Helles Export" style beer with a refreshing hoppiness and pleasant late bittering." Not sure then how to properly title the beer style... although it bares all the characteristics of an APA, so that's what I've listed it as.

Pours a purdy light amber/orange, crystal-clear with a respectable finger and a half of head with nice lacing.

Aroma is a little disappointing... not in a vacuum, but on tap and fresh all the notes that now seem a bit thin (an attractive floral, citric hop predominating, with just whisps of sweet malt backbone) were abundant... on-tap I'd easily give smell a 4.5.

Taste.... aaaah taste. Subtle depth of character and balance, there's only the barest hint of bitterness at the back end and the hop flavors are front and center of an early showing by mild chewy malt. Finishes dry, but not bone-dry, a hint of sweet grapfruit sneaks in and vanishes... clean, clean, clean on the palate. Never overhelmingly delicious, but the sessionability here is off the charts. Fulfills most of the hop craving without overdoing it. Reminds me strongly of Mirror Pond. This seems contradictory to my feelings on Three Floyd's Pride & Joy which had hops in abundance but low bitterness, but to me the difference, and the delight of something like this, or Mirror Pond, and other Pale Ales... is a certain subtlety and complexity, perhaps holding back just a little bit on the hops, a little less oily and full on the palate, maybe less diacetyl... or maybe I just need to refine my palate... but I'm dragging on.

Cortez seems to be pretty far out of the way... and I have no idea if they distribute their beers anywhere, but I'd recommend grabbing a bottle if you ever see one... and if you're ever in town, check out the brewery/restaurant. Solid if unspectacular food, nice vibe... and some interesting selections.
