Beer pours a dark, viscous syrup that leaves dark tears on the side of the glass. Like balsamic vinegar. In the light, and it’s a gradient of rich brownish red, to tan, clear edges.
At 45°, the aroma is pure nostril burning alcohol. As it warms, it reveals dark prunes, umami, anise, dark fruits, currants, cinnamon, pipe tobacco and warming alcohol.
Initially, flavors are completely dominated by the boozy heat, but this demands that you take your time and take it seriously. It legitimately needs to open up in the glass. You need to sip this and spend time with it before it starts to reveal itself. Much like the first growth Boudreaux that was previously held in these barrels, this is an austere, complex liquid. Flavors of molasses, mulling spices, rich red wine, vanilla, dark fruits and a semi-sweet, port finish. Alcohol is strong, of course, but not overwhelming. It’s insanely complex.
Please ignore the other review for this beer. That person is very wrong.
