Dark brown with ruby edges. The essence of the barrel is quite light. This offering seems much lighter in body than the regular Big Bear. The roast profile is definitely not as potent as the regular Big Bear.
This is definitely NOT an improvement on the original Big Bear, which is simply one of my favorite straight-forward stouts.

On tap at O'Brien's in SD, poured into a pint glass
A: Black, completely opaque and the gentle pour yields a fluffy head that never fully recedes.
S: Roasted coffee, oak, grain husk are prominent in the nose. Alcohol is well masked and any notes of bourbon are hiding.
T: The flavors follow, with a touch of bourbon-sweetness rounding the palate. Alcohol is almost nonexistent.
M: Silky-smooth, oily. Medium-bodied with low carbonation.
Really not much of a difference between this and their Big Bear stout. Nothing wrong with beer itself but given the limited availability of barrel-aged brew, I probably wouldn't track this down again.

New Oak Big Bear Stout [BR Black Bear Stout barrel aged; 8.15] on tap at the brewpub in Healdsburg.
Rather minimal barrel adding effects here except for the aroma. Some whisky lingers in the aftertaste.
O. Hard to improve upon the excellent regular stout, and this barrel agreed version does that only for the perhsps the moothfeel and the aroma. Given that I love the regular version, I shouldn't be surprised that this is no better, and maybe not even as good.
