Notes: Hop pickers of old used canvas shovels to move their harvest. We added overflowing scoops of Mosaic, Meridian and Denali to this IPA to create huge tropical and citrus notes. Enjoy a shovel's worth!

Had this at the Bistro's 19th annual ipa festival held April 9, 2016. Haven't managed to pick up a 6 pack of this, would try it again despite it not making the strongest impression when sampled on tap.

Yellow pour, thin white head 1/5". Aroma backs up the commercial tug job Mosaic reference. Had a dank to the point of suspecting Nelsons thing going on. I like when I can't tell if Mosaic or Nelson, really pushes that humid tropical note in that regard.

Taste was leaning more on the Denali and whatever the other hop was, seemingly for bittering. Came off similar to Simcoe with a solid bitter, dry and pine soap kind of lasting effect. Mouth feel was fine, carbonation was appropriate, body of beer was light two row and pale malt kind of familiarity. What smells tropical finishes older school grapefruit like bitterness. Light hop and alcohol burn. Wouldn't say this one hides the alcohol well, its there, but its also not all you get either. Does seem like they did a hybrid ipa with some alterno grains outside the flaked wheat/oats wheelhouse.

Despite the hops used, this beer is really a west coast ipa with a lot of citrus and pine resine. The malt base is quite nice and brings balance. Nice one

July 28th, 2015 - Stinky, like sweat or body odor, and with a waft of some redolent tropical flower, this is a foul smelling beer. Not because it's bad or soured or spoiled, but it is raw and offers a potent musk. The palate is thinner and less carbonated than the other Bear Republic beers from today, with some pineapple and orange juice, a little like a tiki beer. On that note, I much prefer the taste to the smell.

No bottling date, but has a "best buy" date of 2/11/19. Features Mosaic, Meridian and Denali hops.
L: Pours straw yellow in color. Looks unfiltered but not a murk bomb. About a finger of a frothy white cap that retained rather nicely. Heaps of sudsy lacing left on the glass as I partake.
S: Man this thing smells great. Tons of citrus up front, but also doesn't skimp on notes of passionfruit and pineapple. Hop profile is grassy, herbal and semi piney. Smells fantastic.
T: Really awesome. Up front citrus fruit flavor, consisting of orange and grapefruit, but then later translates into a lemony/earthy flavor. Melon and pineapple also detectible on the taste, but not as strong as the citrus. Finish is rather hoppy with lingering notes of pine and lemongrass. Mild dank resin. This is awesome.
F: Medium in body and weight. Soft-ish in feel but still is clean. Feels like it is trying to be a full on NEIPA but hasn't quite reached that pillowy status.
O: I am very much enjoying this. I picked up a single bottle but would consider getting a 6'er of this. Bear Republic is back on my radar. I am very grateful to have tried. Cheers!

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a hazy golden/orange color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of tropical fruits, citrus. Taste is the same as the aroma, malts are present, moderate bitterness. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.

12 oz. bottle. Pours clear gold with a thick off white head. Aroma is tropical fruit and citrus. Taste is sweet malt balanced with tropical fruit, especially pineapple and mango. Dry rye finish with tropical fruit aftertaste. It may have a shovel full of hops but it’s not too bitter, very well balanced.

12 oz bottle.
Hazy golden amber body with a short white head.
Loads of citrus and other tropical fruits in the aroma, with a flavor to match.
Near moderate bitterness for style, although a bit lower than usual in the aftertaste.
Crisp, near medium, semi-dry body with medium carbonation.

Nice looking, hazy gold with large white head steadily shrinking to lasting foamy top with some nice lace.

Aroma is like a smashed-up pile of hops, vague but strong citrusy-juicy elements and wet herbs.

Taste is similar, like chewing on wet hop leaves - very citrusy and herbaceous, no other distinct traits to me given that it is rather overpoweringly like chewing on hops - too intense to have depth or rounded compelexity and balance. It also leaves too much to the spicy-bitter side. It has good character in some ways but lacks balance or restraint and is just too intensely, one-note hoppy.

Feel is nondescript, not watery or thin, but nothing noteworthy.

I know that I keep saying that I am winnowing down The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody, but since not every beer is being CANned 8=( I find myself drawn to some releases that are too tempting to pass up. Bear Republic is a good example. Oh well.

From the Bottle: "Hop pickers of old used canvas shovels to move their harvest. We added overflowing scoops of Mosaic, Meridian and Denali to this IPA to create huge tropical and citrus notes. Enjoy a shovel's worth!"

This reminds me of the old "Two scoops, two scoops of raisins in Kellogg's Raisin Bran" slogan. I Pop!ped the cap, raised a toast to my old Navy buddy & frequent drinking companion, Kenny & let fly with a hard C-Line pour. It decided to be foamy & eventually settle into just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with decent retention, leaving nice lacing in its wake. Color was a hazy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5) with a lot of floaties in evidence. Oops! Too much shoveling? Nose smelled of pineapple and caramel & I thought of pineapple upside-down cake. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was MUCH more nuanced than the nose had led me to expect, with tastes of blueberry, pine, pineapple, orange, grapefruit and caramel! Mmm. It was like an aging DIPA without the age. I liked the bitterness along with the richness of flavor, but I found myself wondering if it would be sustaining or a mere one & done. It just seemed so busy. Finish was dry, bitter & with a bit of fusel alcohol to keep me on my toes.

Poured 12oz bottle into snifter. Light orange color with 2 finger white head. Nice retention and lacing on my glass. Plenty of tropical and citrus hop notes with a bit of dankness. A balance of caramel malt blends in with all the fruity hops. Bitter notes with some juicy citrus of grapefruit and orange. The hops component takes over in the flavor with dank tropical, orange citrus, and some pine character. Good malt presence with a touch of sweet, burnt caramel. Finishes with some light bitterness. Nice medium body with some stickiness. Good carbonation with a dry finish. A tasty IPA loaded with hops, but still has a balanced malt backbone.

12 oz bottle. Pours hazy orange yellow with a medium bubbly white head that goes to a thin film that laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet caramel malt and fruity piney resiny hops.

The flavor is sweet caramel malt and fruit (a little caramel apple) with big piney resiny hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a nice old school IPA.

L: pours gold with a mild haze permeated by streams of rapidly rising bubbles under a 1" lacy cream colored foam cap with fair retention

S: Tropical fruit, melon, citrus, bread crumb, light dank and traces of onion fill the aroma

T: A light sweetness, hinting of lactose, malt and pie crust leads the flavors. It finishes bitter with traces of astringent hops and citrus rind

F: medium-bodied beer is moderately creamy with medium carbonation

O: full flavored IPA has a potent bitterness softened by well developed malt flavors and texture

Glowing. Is the word for the look, smell and taste of Hop Shovel - a new one to me from great, favorite brewer - Bear.
scoops of Mosaic, Meridian and Denali.

a) The body pours crystal clear, "glowing", clean, filtered, and fresh minted, glowing copper. The white, soft head sheds scales of lace. 4.25 for color.
s) Tropical fruit (as in fresh, juicy glowing orange flesh) dominates. I get orange peel, mango, citrus peel, tangerine, grapefruit rind atop pale crystal malts. Marmalade. Big.
t) Follows the aroma. Glowing flavor bursts of tropical fruit on a bed of pale, marmalade like malts with light amount of prickly bitterness, and a post citrus/orange smoothie sip feel.
f) Juicy, wet, well-carbonated, refreshing, clean. And did i say "glowing"?
o) Must try for IPA fans as a novel, juicy, big expression of the featured hops.

L - Bright yellow with 1 finger of head, lots of lacing left on the glass. Unfiltered with no clarity. Gorgeous beer

S - Huge fresh hop aroma. Amazing - as good as an IPA aroma can get

T - Slightly more bitter than citrus, well balanced and malty. Lots of grapefruit. Very tasty

F - Medium body and well carbonated.

O - Possibly the best brew I have had from Bear Republic. They stepped it up!

Draft at the Yard House. Hazy golden pour, small skin of head, rings of lacing. Big, full hoppy aroma, fruity and dank. Taste is malty first, then eclipsed by a wave of dank , earthy hops. Complex finish, but it’s all there and recognizable. Worthy of it’s rep.

Appearance: Very hazy orange amber glass holds a rocky white head that leaves tendrils of lacing.

Aroma: Citric hop notes are full and fresh. A little crystal malt base peeking through. A little earthiness, a whiff of yeast, everything seems in order.

Taste: Mild tea flavor seems hop driven. It's hoppy, but doesn't burn or really bitter much as it is well supported by a frothy pale ale base that actually goes a bit sugary at points.

Mouthfeel: Medium heavy with high carbonation makes it a bit frothy, needed a stronger pour to off gas a bit.

Overall: Like being hit in the face with a hop shovel, in a good way. Big hop flavors, mostly citric, all tasty. Big base makes it balanced but pretty heavy on both sides.

On Tap.

A - Hazy dark orange color with thin lacing and moderate carbonation.

S - Nose is extremely weak, sweet malt and light citrus.

T - Balanced, sweet caramel malt followed by tropical fruit, mango, guava, and ends with a lingering semi-oily grapefruit bitterness. After the bitterness subsides on the back end there's a sugary caramel malt residue left over.

M - Medium body with a very dry finish.

O - Glad to have tried it, that's all I can say.

12oz bottle, dated 09/23/17
Hazy pale amber body with a thin creamy off-white head. Tropical hop aroma of mango, orange, pineapple, and passion fruit with some light caramel malt. Juicy and zesty flavors, very hop forward with mango, pineapple, pine, grass, and passion fruit with grain and caramel in the background adding some sweetness. Medium bodied with higher carbonation, creamy and very resinous. Alcohol is present but not overly. Finishes dry and very bitter with pine and mango lingering. Nice American IPA with new school hops. Glad to start seeing Bear Republic in Illinois again - it's been awhile!

On tap at Dixie. Clear bright orange with a small white head. Smells of strong resiny hops. A little bit of sweetness on the nose. Tastes of piney resiny hops. Spicy rye flavor comes through. Grainy finish as it dries out leaving just pine bitterness. Medium heavy. Low carbonation. Flavorful and aggressive. Also not a particularly easy IPA to drink because of the aggressive flavors.

A little abrasive and harsh as far as hop bitterness goes, but still manages very good hop flavor.

Rye bready malts... Juicy fresh tropical hops, orange and white grapefruit flavored hops... Clean and quenching, but very carbonated and metallic tasting

When you consume a fair quantity of IPA, it is rare anymore to run into one that is unique and stands out. This little falls does just that...great appearance, lovely texture and a top notch taste and finish... I approve.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Beer Nerd tulip
From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $2.69 (10 pct. off with a variety 6-pack)
Purchased: July 7, 2017
Consumed: July 8, 2017
Reviewed as: American IPA
Misc.: No bottled on date

Picked this one up as part of a variety 6-pack at Bine & Vine, landing me 10 percent off overall. Some friends had raved about this one, so I was thrilled to finally see it in stores. Can read, “Hop pickers of old used canvas shovels to move their harvest. We added overflowing scoops of Mosaic, Meridian and Denali to this IPA to create huge tropical and citrus notes. Enjoy a shovel's worth!” Would not be able to pick out Meridian or Denali, but Mosaic is my favorite hop. Hoping to land in the 4.20-4.30 range.

Poured a gold, hazy color with 2-to-3 fingers of rocky white head. Could see some bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. World-class spiderweb foamy lacing. Almost perfect foamy retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled mango, dish soap, overripe tangerine, Mosaic, pineapple, grapefruit rind, floral perfume, hints of blueberry, leafy herbal and stone fruit. (Smell - 3.75)

Tasted much maltier than I thought it would be. Got rye spices, lemon, iced tea, bitter mango peel, tangerine, red grapefruit rind, pineapple, berries, leafy herbal, passion fruit, peach, guava and lime. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Long finish. (Feel - 3.75)

Nowhere near as good as I thought it was going to be, but still pretty good. I think I overrated it overall. (Overall - 4.00)
