On tap at Bear Republic in August 2009.

Pours a reddish amber with a tan head and good lacing. The smell was that of lightly-toasted caramel malt, toffee, and slight hop bitterness. Same in the taste department, although it's also ever-so-slightly nutty. Fairly light body with appropriate carbonation; excellent drinkability.

I had this beer as part of a flight of samples at the Healdsburg, California restaurant. From tap and in 3oz sample glasses.

A-garnet body with a beige head

S-sweet malt with some smoke

T-syrup-like malt flavor, an ashy/smoky aftertaste

M-Light, served from a nitro tap

D-Didn't really care for this beer. The smoky aftertaste was too reminiscent of an ashtray.

On cask at the 2009 Pizza Port Real Ale Fest. Poured into an imperial pint glass. The appearance is auburn with a tan head and some excellent retention and lacing.

The aroma took me by surprise. It's packed with toasted malt, toffee, nuts, and caramel. It's slightly grainy, with no detectable hop character or alcohol.

This has a lot of flavor. The flavor is very toasted, with a low level of bitterness. The malt is nutty, with lots of caramel and toffee. The alcohol is obviously hidden. Though the hops impart bitterness, the flavor is malt accented with really no discernable hop flavor.

Medium bodied with a dry and creamy mouthfeel. This beer packs a lot of flavor. Bravo for a good mild.
