Spawn of Yaga was inspired by the Russian folktale of Old Baba Yaga and her nefarious deeds. Deep, dark, and luscious layers of flavor were summoned through the play of light against dark caramel and roasted malts, nefarious use of blackstrap molasses, incantations of licorice root, and toiling over a boiling cauldron of invert syrup crafted in our brewery.

Big, black, burly, with a nose of rich molasses & dark roast malts. Nice.
Spawn of Yaga is like having a tooth filled with anise. It linger & lingers & lingers long after the initial wave of black licorice passes…I suspect I’ll still taste it tomorrow. Anise really builds as it warms, too. Post-anise there is light roast, molasses, sweetness, with a faint whiff of chocolate. A little thin for an “RIS”. One & done for me.
Pretty good brew, but the profusion of anise limits the appeal.

Head was kinda' small and disappeared quickly. Really nice body. Rich, full and smooth throughout. Strong roast flavors and a clear roast dryness and bitterness on the finish, but blended very nicely. Nice complex flavors with the dark fruit and hints of licorice. Alcohol notable but it also does not overwhelm but blends with some nice rose water flavors. 12% is a head kicker but it didn't overtake me and or get too sweet and heavy by the end. I'd pick it up again, but not until I find Baba Yaga to try first.

Pours brown/black with a small tan head with some lacing.
Smells and tastes of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and molasses. Sips start a bit sweet and finish with some bitterness and boozy warmth.
Medium heavy body with very light carbonation. Syrupy mouthfeel.
This is a nice high power sipper.

definitely worth trying. bit of a mixed bag but overall pretty tasty.
L: drinking from the can - nice looking can. spooky, in keeping with the season.
S: rich. caramel. molasses.
T; follows the nose. lots of molasses. it's good; could be better. missing the stone fruit. I don't get the 100+ IBU; mostly sweet, admittedly with a bitter finish. ABV well hidden.
F: smooth & rich.
O: can't put it in the league with the best in class, e.g. rasputin and narwhal. but it's good, no doubt, and the price point at my local monger was definitely attractive.
