Had on-tap at Sunswick 35/35 in Astoria, NY on 5/22/11.
Reviewed from notes.
A - This beer pours a nice dark brown color that had a ruby glow to it on the edges of the glass. It has a nice off-white head that has good retention and left some nice lacing behind.
S - It smells of toasted malts and has a big caramel sweetness. There is a nice hop presence, and quite a bit of dark fruit as well. The other notes I am getting are nuts, toffee, and citrus.
T - It starts off with sweet caramel malts, chocolate, and dark fruit. There is a nice hop presence throughout. There is also a nutty flavor to this. The finish is a bit dry.
M - This has a full body and decent carbonation. It goes down pretty smooth and has nice flavor. It is quite sweet, and the finish is dry.
O - This has alright drinkability. It started off good, but got more difficult to drink the more of it I had. Overall, I thought it was pretty good, but there are much better doppelbocks out there.

Another growler brought down to az by a friend from cali.
A: A nice chocolatey brown color. Not as thick or opaque as a stout.
S: Definite hop aromas, which I did not expect from a beer as dark as this. Just a hint of nutty aroma.
T: Subtle nutty flavor, with a malty finish. Enjoyable first sip, but it becomes a little laboring for me by the time I get to the end of the beer. Kind of a dry finish
M: Nice, full mouthfeel. Not a lot of carbonation, but that may be due to the growler and the distance it traveled.
O: A pretty good beer. Nice flavors. But definitely not something I can drink more than one of.

Pours a slightly dark caramel chocolate brown color with clear golden mahogany/copper edges and a half finger off white head that slowly fades , leaving minimal lacing.
Slightly toasted caramel and chocolate malt aroma with some zesty peppery and clove. Hints of toffee, nut, citrus peel and banana.
Medium body that's on the lighter end with lots of citrus peel flavor and spicy clove. The citrus presence is more prominent that the slightly smokey chocolate and caramel notes. Hints of toffee and hazelnut but I wish that it was more balanced with more of a dark malt flavor. Lots of lemon peel and some subtle ripe banana.
