This version is refermented in the barrel with roasted local prickly pears. The intense maltiness of The Grizz leads to a rich sweetness from the pears to a sour shot from the wild yeast of Alexander Valley.

Brownish pour, doesn't create any head to speak of and therefore the same applies to having nothing to retain or provide lace for the children. Aroma was bland, sketchy funk, nothing tart.

Taste was tea, low carbonation, dirty, I just didn't get any pear or prickliness from it. Disappointing especially given how good nectarine grizz was.

Brown liquid, not much in terms of head or lace. Totally a different color than I was expecting. Aroma lacked sour qualities, did have some undesireable funkiness to it, like old warm feet soaked in sugar water.

Taste just didn't do it for me, I initially thought, how can nectarine grizz be so good and sour, and this just well, isn't my cup of tea. Nothing prickly about it, any pear flavor is largely muted by the majority taste sensation of sugar.

Next to just about every blackberry beer and Cuvee de Champions running out 15 minutes before the festival started, this could easily have been the biggest letdown at Stone's Sourfest '11.

On-tap at Sour Fest

A: The pour on this one is dark brown with a finger of off-white head.

S: The prickly pear certainly comes through on this. The base beer does too. There is a nice bit of tartness to the nose, but it's mostly vinegar. It's also quite sweet with a bit of a Jolly Rancher quality.

T: I thought the aroma was sweet but that was nothing after tasting this beer. Incredibly sweet and sugary with a ton of Jolly Rancher and prickly pear sweetness. A mild to moderate acetic sourness is there but is overwhelmed.

M: Medium body with a medium level of carbonation.

O: Although I thought the nectarine version was quite good, this one missed the mark big time.
