An Imperial American Wheat Beer, Das Koma was brewed in the spirit of a Double IPA using pale ale malt, white wheat malt, and epic amounts of experimental varieties of German hops in the kettle and as dry hops.

A: Light copper, with a creamyish white head.

S: Citrus and wheat in the nose.

T: More wheat, more orange, it's basically what you'd expect, and really really tasty. They have great taste in hops.

M: Medium bodied, not quite smooth enough.

O: Delicious. I wish they bottled this. If you can find it on tap, I recommend trying it.

Note: Imbibed on-tap at the cellar reserve party at the brewery, among more than a dozen other beers, from batches that would go on to the various beer festivals, and thus in their prime.

Served in a glass at the 4th Cellar Party at Bear Republic brewery. From notes. Reviewed 30 September 2012.

A: Clear amber, no head or lace.

S: Nutty; spicy banana bread. Malty, fruity, and spicy.

T: I really like this beer. It does taste like banana bread, but because it is so noticeably strong and hoppy, it really compares more favourably with a double IPA than a hefeweizen.

M: Heavy, big, substantial, and tasty.

O: Delicious! A fascinating wheat ale. Recommended.

On tap at the Birdsal House, Peekskill, NY. Enjoyed a few months ago and reviewed from notes.

Pours Lightly hazed almond amber off white fine head and leaving moderate strands of fine lace.

Malt and lime define the nose

Notes of pepper, smoke and more lime. Boldly malty and peaty brew.

Strong brew thats packed with flavor wheat. Worth a try if it comes to your local.

On tap at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Pours a hazy honey orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, wheat, and candied citrus zest. Taste is much the same with a fruity citrus flavor on the finish. There is a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer but it tastes better than it smells in my opinion.

On tap at the brewpub in Healdsburg, CA

Menu description claims its an Imperial Wheat Ale brewed with a Double IPA in mind. This may be more akin to a wheatwine that a pale wheat. The website offers no information except to say it's on tap.

Pours a murky yellow with nice head and visible carbonation. Smells of straw and, yeast, and alcohol. Taste is dominated by wheat and has enough hop to make it bitter, however, I'm not overly impressed with the balance. The wheat doesn't seem to be enough to mask the alcohol either. This beer comes in around 7.5% ABV and is noticeable over through the wheat. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and warm. Not a great beer, but since we don't get too much BR in Raleigh, I'm glad I tried it while I was in CA.
