From notes at the brewery yesterday, 7/26/11, where it was served in a pint glass.

Black Bart is opaque dark brown like dark chocolate and looks creamy, almost as if on nitro. There is a light brown, super fine, creamy head. It is very murky, as if it is not at all filtered and at the bottom of the glass there was plenty of yeast collecting.

The aroma is full of soulful, creamy, almost Hershey's chocolate. There is also a citrus hop bite.

That very same creamy chocolate flows over the tongue and is the dominant aspect of this beer from its looks, to flavor and texture. Hops are more expressive than in the nose as Cascade and grapefruit flavors. It's quite well hopped for a Porter. A little cocoa powder and dark plump fruit.

This looks and feels quite like its on nitro all the way through; low carbonation, very smooth but thin. It is thin but very full, possibly this owes something to all the yeast I can see settling.

I was very glad to see this was on-tap when I visited. Black Bart is a simple, satisfying Porter with a little West Coast hop character.
