A 500ml bottle with a BB of Aug 2013, so it's a little out of date. Acquired some time back from Booths. Another of Wye Valley's 'top totty' series....
Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A deep reddish-chestnut hue with visible sediment and light carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of sweet chocolate malt with hints of grain, subtle roasted malt, dried fruit, faint brown sugar and a touch of stewed hops. Unexciting.
Tastes of sweet brown malt with a dry finish. Notes of chocolate malt, grain, mild roasted malt, a slight nuttiness, dried fruit, faint brown sugar, stewed hops and earthy yeast. A twinge of harsh cardboard in the background, followed by a restrained bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with light carbonation and decent body. A bit flat and textureless. Slightly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of acrid cardboard, stewed leaves and faint roasted malt.
Meh - a decidedly average brown ale. Even the bottle conditioning doesn't seem to lift it much. Looks OK, if a little undercarbonated, but the aroma and flavour are just malty and flaccid. The body leaves me unmoved. Dull and stodgy - weak malt and yeast notes. Leaves me underwhelmed; no need to seek it out.

Bottle conditioned 500ml drank on 31 July 2013: BBD 3 Aug 2013, so it was poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard just four days before it's life ran out!
No sediment left the bottle: I got a clean brown beer with a ruddy red hue, on top an off-white head of tight foam.
Malty lead with a slight hop finish, fruity with caramel notes. Nothing too strong or powerful, in fact it was almost bland. Not one of Wye Valley's better brews, hope the cask version comes out with more oomph!
