On tap at the brewery into a shaker pint glass.

A-Despite the bartender wiping out my head with a bad pour, there is about a finger of tan-grey foam on my glass. Retention is not great, but a film hangs around for a while. The beer beneath is deep deep brown in color; it is almost opaque. Not bad looking stuff.

S-The aroma is pleasant enough, but a bit on the simple side. I pick up little whiffs of cocoa powder, milk chocolate, some lightly roasted barley grain notes, and suggestions of lactose or milk. Nothing amazing here, but nothing offensive or off, either.

T-The taste does not quite live up to the smell. The beer is, true to style, very dry, but the flavor is overwhelmed by an ashy char note that carries a strange bitterness to it. That char flavor seems to wipe out the lighter flavors of cocoa, toasted barley, and milk that I could smell.

M-The body is pretty substantial, but it drinks pretty easily. This is no motor oil. Carbonation is moderate and pretty soft.

O-This beer looks the part, smells the part, and feels the part but it is a bit of let-down. I don't know what is happening with the taste, but that ashy bitter note is enough to keep me away from this.
