Reviewed from old notes of a growler purchase. This beer is on tap very rarely from an oak aged effort they did from a couple years ago. Hard pours a thin layer of dark brown head over a pitch liquid. Smells lightish. Creamy, some oak, some black patent cherry. Alcohol is present, but not a key factor. Estery, chocolate, roast is dry and woody. Anise that the sun has baked the aromatics out of.
Tastes sour cherry, with mild chocolate and a milky creaminess. The cherry...I'm thinking...it's not from black patent, but from esters. Fruity notes are a noticable feature. Coffee from a pot that's been on the burner all day. Oak is present with a thin molasses...like molasses fermented out, leaving a husk of molasses character. Coffee roast is drying, which I think contributes to the cherry and keeps the thick body from hanging malty sweet on the tongue. Some vanilla, but a woody character cuts it short. Thick mouthfeel washes clean off the tongue. A bit ashy in the aftertaste. Mild carbonation, but it's from a couple day old growler.
