On tap at the brewpub.
A: Cola brown with a thin head and a good ring of lace.
S: Light molasses scent with a strong licorice/anise presence. There's a touch of salt as well.
T: Licorice dominates and provides flavor against a medium body. There's a welcome, alcohol warming toward the finish. I also get hints of sasparilla. Overall, the flavors are novel but slightly gimmicky. It would be nice to have a more robust chocolate flavor to make this a really great brew.
M: Rich and smooth throughout. The uncommon spicing add nice growing flavor and complexity. One drawback: the finish is a little thin and asceptic. It would be perfect with greater length.
D: Very sweet and smooth.
Overall, a unique and tasty holiday ale. Check this out if you get the chance.
Update (Dec 2007): This year's Christmas Ale has addressed a lot of the flaws from last year (asceptic finish, overwhelming anise, water mouthfeely, salty aroma) and makes for a solid brown ale. Unfortunately, they've toned down some of the novel flavors so much that it's a little too tame. Perhaps the 2008 version will strike the perfect balance.... That said, this year's is a testament to how much a brewery can improve by tinkering with a beer: the holiday flavors are still there and now matched against a more standard, enjoyable backdrop.
