Gouden Carolus Indulgence is a limited series of beers brewed every year with varying content. Funken - German for spark - is the 6th taste expression released under this label.
This version elegantly combines the German tradition of ‘Rauchbier’ (smoked beer) with the well-balanced tastes of our Belgian beer culture.
During the brewing process, some of the malt is replaced by ‘peated malt’. This produces an amber beer with an aromatic, spicy taste of hops, enhanced by a mellow fruitiness and a subtle hint of smoke that lingers.

Copenhagen 5/3 2021. 75 cl corked bottle from Den Belgiske Ølbutik, Jyllingevej, Vanløse. The usual Carolus Indulgence design with a lot of gold and a little stinker with info about the beer style, ABV and the usual signature from the family owner. This time with a blue stripe.
Pours slightly unclear amber with a big, fluffy white head. Settles as thin, frothy layer of foam Rawling up te sides of the glass. Massive lacing.
Aroma is intense with a malty sweet odor dominated by a strong scent of smoke. Sweet malts. Caramel. Peat. Some floral notes hidden underneath the smoke.
Light carbonation. Medium thick, oily, soft, slightly greasy, lightly tinging texture.
Flavor is medium intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a medium strong bitterness. Aftertaste is sweetish. Finish is semi-dry and smoky.
A quite smoky Belgian where there is not room for much else than pets and smoke.
