hmmm - 330ml can poured colour as fizzy cola, large bubbled head.
All malts on nose, and really that's it. A middle of the road sessionable sweetish stout. pretty sure I had when it was released as a 640 bottle but the stats don't show it here.
Bland.

This is a nice beer but not as complex and rich as hoped for. It is a little thin for a stout and the coffee-like toastiness or aroma is not there. Easy drinker though.

Almost complete black, slight red-brown hue. Aroma is roasty dark chocolate malts, dark fruits, and faint coffeebeans. Flavour is fullish sweetness with a mild dryness to the finish. Palate is medium bodied and malty. Quite easy to drink.

Look:
375 ml can poured into handle glass.
color looks good. very dark with hues of red when held up to the light.
Half a finger of off white head that dissipated quickly leaving a lacy ring around the glass.
actual can looks like its marketed to teenagers going to a rave.

Smell:
Malty but not very strong at all. If i didn't know it was beer it could almost be confused with Coke or Pepsi.

Taste:
It actually tastes good. strong malt flavors with a sweet lingering after taste.
Perhaps a hint of coffee in there too.
Not very complex. only a few flavors that hit you straight away and leave you searching for more too come but it never does.

Feel: fairly watery for a stout. Very thin on the tongue but thickens up a bit in the back of your throat.
Not cloying at all which is a good sign of a session beer.

OA: It's obviously marketed as a session stout which I could see my self drinking from time to time. Room temperature is probably ideal drinking temp as the cold doesn't hide the few but nice flavors that are there to taste.

I'll probably buy a carton to have a session on it just o be sure.

Its worth a try at least.

June 2015

Poured from the can.

It pours a dark but not black, more like coca-cola. Tannish head with lacing.

Light roast on the nose.

VERY light body. Small amount of chocolate with a very nice roasty finish.

This is a session stout, easy. Reminds me more of an Old than a stout. I'm not a total wanker but this is too watery for the style.

Apparently this Stout has been around for a while now... never seen it before and thought it was a brand-new Mountain Goat release - and I do enjoy their brews (though mainly when they’re at their wackiest with the Rare Breed single batches). Well, their web site doesn’t even have this beer listed - maybe I’m imagining it? Perhaps it doesn’t really exist, like in some sort of beer matrix, or “the beertrix” - damn that sounds like an awesome film idea starring Keanu Reeves as a Craft Brewer also known as ‘Faro’, he finds out that the macro beer world is an illusion and ends up leading the craft beer revolution! [note: there is no spoon].

Poured from a 375ml can into a nonic pint.

A: Clear cola coloured body with a beige cappuccino foam 2 cm head that leaves a decent lace on the side of the glass... good marks here. 7/10,

S: Caramel-tinged sweet and roasted malts greet you upfront, not used to caramel notes in a Stout but what the hell Mountain Goat, with hints of earthy coffee and spring water in the background. Aroma, apart from the caramel, is pretty much in the ball-park for a classic Irish Dry Stout. 7/10.

T: Exactly as above: sweet caramel/roasted malts, earthy coffee and spring water. Finish is dry, toasty with a touch of coffee grind bitterness. The flavour does have a hint of metal my fillings are telling me, however from a can it is to be expected, in fact it would be weird if it didn’t have a metallic aftertaste. Could definitely benefit from a bit more flavour but that is the Russian Imperial Stout drinker in me talking. 7/10.

M: Mid to light bodied, a tad watery, with a lightish carbonation. Heavy beers have really killed my appreciation of lighter bodied beers, oh well. 6/10.

D: Well it is certainly not Mountain Goat’s finest hour. It is also not their worst either - I think their Summer Ale holds claim to that title - this is simply put: Middle-of-the-road, and when you’re a brewer like Mountain Goat that has some solid beers on offer (hell their Steam Ale introduced me to the Steam Beer style) you have the ability to create a better Stout than this. Overall... those things you wear... sorry, bad joke, Mountain Goat can do better, and so can I (as a consumer - probably not as a brewer, still haven’t made a Stout yet) so I will stick with Samuel Smith’s or Founders Breakfast Stout or Old Raspy or Coopers Best Extra, etc... no lack of good Stout options out there. 6/10.

Food match: Tinned Irish stew with crusty white bread or a Ploughman’s lunch.

Pours a nice foamy head that lasts a couple of minutes. Striking dark brown / black. Didn’t get many text book stout notes on the nose, rather some light metallic notes (if anythng at all). Much better in the mouth, sweet roasted malts drive the palate. Slight acidic like kick at the end, but pretty good all up. Shows some reasonable palate weight.

I must admit i havnt tried this beer before and have seen it around heaps and have just avoided it for some reason so finally decided to finally see what its like after hearing mixed reviews and set the record straight,it pours a jet black as night colour with very nice carbonation that leaves a two finger cappicino laced head with heaps of visible lacing,it has aromas of strong alcohol and mocha malts and almost smells similar to a bourbon and coke not a very nice smell, the mouthfeel is above average with a mediumish mouthfeel at the start with hints of raisins, chocolate, coffee and some hops right at the creamy finish and im so glad the taste is so different to the aroma very nice,i cant believe a beer can look this good, smell bad and still taste beautiful anyways would drink again.

Pours a decent black with a thin tan head. Decent head retention.

Roasty aroma with coffee and bitter chocolate notes. A light fruit sweetness is also present. Overall, it could be stronger.

Nice flavour with a good upfront hit of roast bitterness. Espresso and cocoa hints fade into a sweet, slightly fruity malt flavour. Espresso lingers in the finish. Smooth and tasty.

Mouthfeel is a bit thin as I would like it to be a heavier than average beer. Carbonation is not overpowering and works well.

A tasty, smooth, drinkable brew. Plenty of flavour but just a bit lacking in body. Probably my favourite of the Mountain Goat beers.

Nice not quite black colouf with a thin tan head. Degraded into an average lacing.

Gave hints of chocolate and coffee on the nose along with a touch of expected dark burnt malt scents.

Taste was a nice bitter chocolate/coffee balance with some light burnt malts. Not very intense but admittedly very smooth. Just a touch of sweetness, like a teaspoons worth of sugar in an espresso.

Mouthfeel was a little light and fizzy compared to what I like for the style, but only slightly so. On the other hand it was nice and smooth.

Not my favourite Australian stout, but better than average. It's a touch light but also very easy drinking. I'll keep this on rotation for the remainder of the winter.

This pours pitch black. I would have liked a bit more head.

Some sweet choc aromas, touch of coffee and I got a bit of Vegemite as well.

Chocolate a bit more bitter on the palate. Nice though. A bit of dark fruitiness in there as well.

I like my stouts with a bit more body.

An average sort of stout.

Pours tar black with slight copper hue. Generous brown/tan head fades quickly leaving good lacing.
Lots of roasted grains, some dark chocolate and oats.
Initial sweet flavour quickly overpowered by bitter roasted grains, which contribute a rich espresso hit.
Thick, rich mouthfeel although carbonation is a bit over the top.

Had this on tap as a "Guest brew" at the Hargreaves Hill Brewery.
It is smooth and quite soft feeling and tasting stout. Almost creamy in fact. Not really bitter and has minimal burnt grain flavours.
Not a high impact stout but really drinkable
