On tap for the 4th Annual LA Beer Week Beer Festival at Union Station in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a slightly hazy orange with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and slight coffee aromas. Taste is much the same with a mild citrus zest bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink but the coffee really doesn’t come through very strong in the aroma or flavor.

On tap at Congregation LB.

A: Pours a slightly hazy amberish orange with a thin white head which leaves trace lace.

N: Malts along with some floral, fruity, herbal and piney notes.

T: Mainly malts and pine flavors with some fruitiness and just the faintest earthy coffee. As this warms the coffee becomes more noticeable, but still just a trace.

M: Semi-moderate body and carbonation. Some mild sweetness and bitterness on the finish.

O: Well perhaps not a west coast (USA) style hop forward IPA, but Australia's version with coffee added. Coffee used is Nicaraguan according to the brewer provided by Seven Seeds. Hops included Tasmanian galaxy and US cascade.

Bottle from a liquor store in Melbourne. From notes.

A - Poured copper. Bright with one finger of fluffy eggshell head. Medium carbonation, good long lace down the glass and a half finger of retention.

S - Grapefruit, caramel, tropical citrus hops and very small coffee notes.

T - Coffee, light grapefruit and caramel.

M - Nice coffee/hop finish and a light bitterness. Smooth with good carbonation and a medium body.

O/D - Lot's has probably faded since this is dated best before 15/05/12 but it's still quite tasty. The coffee is a nice addition with it's subtlety. Quite enjoyable.

From Warners - fridged.

Pours a copper body /one finger amber head with delightfully varied bubble size. Lacing excellent

Aromas of the usual grapefruit and pine suspects. No coffee on nose.

Taste is a little duller than the nose, and the coffee is not present to start with. Tastes just like a standard IPA, with a slight build up of a duller taste - maybe the coffee dregs?. Sad.

Mouthfeel a little flat, a bit more carbonation would be good.

Overall, not too bad, but this bottle is now 7 months old, and I suspect showing it... BB 5/12. Coffee just doesn't feature. Wish it was only a 375ml :-(

Not surprisingly shows shares quite a bit of character with the Rare Breed IPA but thankfully not as cloying and sweet. This beer doesn’t scream "coffee" but certainly there. Indeed, I though the coffee added a green, almost unripe herbal note that combatted the underlying power of the IPA nicely. Broad minerally finish. No doubt there is plenty of power and presence for a sub 6% beer. Goat are doing a good job with these beers.

Pours a lovely burnished amber colour, quite bright and extremely clear. Head is full and frothy, forming streaking lace as it falls down. Body is exceptionally lightweight, however, which is a bit disappointing for an IPA or an espresso. Ah well, can't win them all.

Nose is wonderfully realised, and pleasantly odd. Big fruity light-roasted coffee characters mingle beautifully with slightly spicy, slightly citric hops, with mellower tropical characters. Not a lot of sweetness, but this isn't about depth, or body—this is about fragrance. Oh man. It sounded like a crazy idea, but the fruity coffee beans do gel and bounce of the fragrant hoppiness—like so many crazy ideas, it just might work.

Unfortunately, the palate is far weaker, so much so that it's disappointing. Mild coffee spice comes through with a touch of hop bitterness, but no complexity and almost no true hop flavour. This, combined with the very light body, means that there's nothing to back it up and the finish falls away, limp and empty.

It's a beer all about fragrance. That's OK, but I feel as though this had the potential to be much, much better. I thought that my problem with the beer was going to be the melding of coffee and hops—it's not, that works beautifully—instead, my problem is the fact that it just ends up too bland.

And I didn't expect this to be too bland.

Clear mahogany with a cream coloured head of a finger or so. Leaves a nice raised ring.

Quite hop forward, however unlike most previous reviewers I find the coffee prominent enough to make it difficult to clearly distinguish the hop flavours. Definitely passionfruit and pine in there and a decent amount of candied malt character.

The coffee gives an interesting spicy freshness to the taste. Green capsicum, pine, candied orange and caramel.

Decent body for the ABV. Spritzy, slightly prickly carbonation and notable bitterness.

Definitely a successful use of coffee that doesn't detract from drinkability one iota, which was always the risk This brewery continues to rise in my estimation.

Pours dark amber with ruby hints.
Nose shows tropical fruity hops in abundance with passion-fruit and peach really standing out. Underneath is a soft earthy, nutty character that, once smelt, is easily recognisable as the coffee. Adds an interesting aspect.
The coffee is much more noticeable as a flavour, adding a distinct earthy, bitter note. The hops enter afterwards with more fruity characters along with a fair bit of sweet clean malt.
Could use more carbonation.
Definitely interesting, but the coffee character seems a little harsh as a flavour.

Pours a red amber colour, off-white head that's quite bubbly but with good retention. Lacing is not bad at all; looks good.

Smell is mostly IPA, with nice fruity floral hops, lots of lemon and passionfruit, pineapple with pine bark and a coffee bitterness hidden behind it all that is quite odd. Doesn't quite mesh together and it would be easy to overlook the coffee if I didn't know it was there.

Tastes quite organic; vegetative and slightly sour with bitter coffee grounds blending with floral hops. Not as fruity or light as they might have been, with again not a great mesh between the two elements. Coffee kind of bitters, but also diminishes the hop flavour to make the finish just flatter than it might have been if the hops were just left alone.

Good body to it, quite smooth and a bit dry on the back. Great IPA texture.

Good brew and at no point did I not enjoy it, but it makes me wonder why bother making a coffee IPA, when all I can really taste is what would have been a delicious IPA, with this odd muting of the resins with a clashing coffee bitterness.

Beautiful clear copper with a foamy 1cm lightly tanned head. Excellent stability and lacing. Low carbonation.

Aroma is a bit muted but getting some sweet floral and spicy notes. The spicy part feels like it could just as easily be from hops as it could coffee. Label states cascade and galaxy hops but guessing they were held back a bit to keep from overpowering the coffee. Or (being in Tassie this is always a possibility) age and storage conditions have degraded the aroma already.

Ok so this isn't one of those kick you in the teeth bitter IPAs but it's still quite tasty. Spicy bitterness backs up a nice smooth sweet/bready malt. Not a huge coffee advocate but there is a coffee fruitiness lingering around a bit in the finish.

A good mix without overplaying either side. I guess with compromise comes some trade offs. While it doesn't really showcase hops or coffee, it shows that with restraint you will still get a damn tasty beer.

640 ML poured into a tulip

A-- Poured a clear, dark golden amber color. Short lived one finger off white head. Goes quickly to film. Much better retention on swirling. Fluffy off white head that does have some staying power before fading. Does leave sticky lacing on the sides of the glass.

S-- Galaxy hops. Passion fruit, mango, and orange. Just small sniffs of coffee bean. Quite a tropical nose. No hints of malt backbone.

T-- Coffee!! Slightly roasted coffee with hints of tropical fruit and bits of orange and grapefruit. At first any bitterness is from the coffee beans, not the hops. As it warmed up the hops did get a bit bigger.

M-- Slick and smooth and a bit earthy. Medium heavy feel and light carbonation. No gaps in this at all. Bitterness is more in the back and it is sort of a pungent grapefruit and old passion fruit feel. Finishes with pungent grapefruit and a weak watered down espresso finish. Could be a bit lighter I guess as thought a bit heavy for the ABV. Not a complaint on this at all.

O-- A for the the concept. Like how Mountain Goat has thought way outside the box with this when you read about a lot of BA IPA's and stuff like that. Not real sure that you can do 2 in a sitting as I just think this is too heavy for what the ABV is. Says me who drinks 10 % RIS's. Either way I liked this for the concept and what the beer is.

310ml tulip style glass at The Local Taphouse, Darlinghurst.

Pours an odd colour, predominantly copper colour with some amber and golden hints. Has a modest head of foam that falls pretty quickly. Bit of spotty lacing.

Smell has the faintest bit of earthy coffee, but you have to really agitate your glass to bring this out. Moreso the smell is of grapefruit and some citrus.

Tasting some pineapple early, a little floral later. Some of the grapefruit comes through as well.

Mouthfeel is inconsistent, bitterness really wavers, from very mild to decently mouthsapping at times.

Overall its a good beer, just inconsistent and the coffee is almost non-existent.

On tap into an imperial pint glass--gotta love the (former) empire.

A-Thick creamy head, bronze-orange body, with the head leaving a very pretty white lace.

S-Basically hops. Knowing there was coffee in it there was no discernible coffee aroma.

T-The coffee bitterness hits the palate first, and moves into a strong citrus/grapefruit hop medley. The more of this that goes down the more you are aware of the presence of coffee, but it's never a dominant feature. It's more like the subtlety of smoke in a helles lager. Adds complexity, but lacks the character necessary to give it its own descriptions.

M-very smooth, and not especially crisp, but sessionable.

O-I loved the subtlety of the coffee, which made drinking "another IPA" all the more enjoyable. This was not just "another IPA".
