Dark reddish amber in color, almost chestnut, pours with a finger worth of creamy, dense tan colored head that leaves a skim on the surface of the beer but no real lace on the glass.
Fragrant hoppy aroma with a heavy undertone of caramel.
Malt forward, with a solid body to it and loads of red caramel flavor to it that increases as it warms, though there is lots of sweetness to it, it never feels too over-sweet.
The Malt forward blends nicely into a the back end with a fairly bitter finish with a hoppy leafy/ tobacco flavor to it and some light hints of blackstrap molasses, vanilla and black pepper that ends with a lingering strong, sweet and hoppy aftertaste with a fortified boozy feel to it, all in all it makes for a strong but well balanced if not traditional example of an Irish styled red ale.
