robust porter with coconut, a cool beer from these guys, and smart in a couple of ways. first, its not sweet at all, i almost always expect coconut beers to be sugary and desserty, which to me is often a turn off, but here the base porter is quite dry, and the added coconut doesnt contribute much sugar, so we have the flavor without the sweet, meaning a much more drinkable pint than it would otherwise be. the other thing that i like here is the integration of the coconut into the base porter, which is roasty and flavorful on its own. the coconut never feels like an intrusion or disruption to that, and in fact serves to highlight the coffee-like dark barley and light smoke character in here. its toasted and natural tasting, with maybe a hint of vanilla to it. the beer is pleasant to drink on, and i like the alcohol staying quite low in here, especially with the 20 ounce pints that kicked my butt all over ontario this week. a little thin on body and a little light on carbonation, more of both would make this even better, but the beer is very good and well worth checking out if you see it around. one of the more ambitious beers i had this week.
