Style: Baltic Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
A very rare style that was originally created as a competitor to the popular London porter. So, what makes it a German porter? Why it's been brewed with lager yeast of course! The roasted barley provides chocolate flavours and the malt sweetness is complimented by a finely balanced bitterness. Two Weeks Notice was designed by brewer Brad Wright exclusively for our annual Oktoberfest in Vankleek Hill.

Dark dark brown. Fine beige head. Good lacing but low retention.

Wow, interesting aroma. Woodsy, sharp, smoky, musty grains.

Complex taste. Roasted nuts. Woody - oak. Revolves to semi-sweet chocolate then woody herby bitterness. I perceive an iodine taste.

Full mouthfeel. Nice nip at front. Feels like mouth is full of fumes.

This is roasted heaven.

Two Weeks Notice looks just like used motor oil. It's not the most attractive beer and its "head" does it no favours - it is neither foamy nor frothy but is instead a loose string of bubbles that lack structure and substance (strength too, the glass is left bare).

I've reviewed enough Beau's beers to know not to expect anything too bold. This aroma does in fact features notes of coffee and chocolate, but they are negligible relative to those found in American or even most English Porters. So what is a German porter, anyhow? Apparently just as an English one brewed with lager yeast.

This, in my mind, isn't enough to distinguish it as a distinct style. Besides, the flavours certainly are not unique, if a little muddled; this ultra-mild taste combines the lactose sweetness of a milk stout and the sooty roasted grain notes of a classic London porter but fails to develop any notable characteristics of its own.

The mouthfeel isn't without some ashy (some might even suggest bacon-y) smokiness and a pleasantly bittersweet fudge-and-vanilla profile. Problem is it's all too underwhelming. The fair way of putting it would be "mild", but when I get even a whiff of dark chocolate and not the rich mouthfeel that should correspond to it, I'm disappointed.

I was hoping 2 Weeks Notice would offer the awesome gratification of the printer smashing scene from Office Space - instead it was about as engaging as working in a cubicle. There's nothing wrong with working in cubicles, it's just a little too mundane for me. This is yet another Beau's offering that is nice, but nothing more.

A - near pitch black, tower of brown head retained respectably
S - some musty roasty malts, a bit of a sour adjunct thing going on, and mild dark fruit
T - cold coffee and burnt toast maltiness, some bitter grassiness towars the finish
M - medium to light body, musty through the middle, surprisingly bitter on the finish
O - its a little different, not bad but not a great example of the style, still worth a try though

600ml brown bottle with a batch number.

LOOK: Full darkness, lovely froth

SMELL: Burnt toast, roasted grain, mild burnt raisins, dark bread, yeast, faint banana taffy

TASTE: Brown bread, chicory, smooth, mild crispness, clean, unsweetened chocolate, modest hopping, mild hop bitterness, slight roasty drying finish

A German Porter we have here more or less, porter lovers should seek this one out for its subtle uniqueness alone. Good drinking.

Appearance: It has a nice dark brown color to it with some amber hues shining through. It has a nice beige head that dies down moderately and leaves some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of roasted malts, dark chocolate, some nuttiness and faint caramel.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some roasted malts, dark chocolate, nutty notes, light caramel and a nice earthy bitterness.

Mouthfeel: It has a med-high carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.
