John Robert Porter pours a very dark brown color, with a nice long lasting white head. Aroma is roasty, a little sweet. Flavor is a bit harsh, nice kick of flavor, a hint of coffee, sweeter. Good body and feel. Overall, a very nice, decent, porter.

Color is a deep reddish-brown -- golden highlights emerge when held up to direct sunlight. Head is a off-white / light tan, tight in composition, and exhibits good lacing on the glass.
Nose is rather smokey and strikes me more as that of a "Stout" than a "Porter" for what it's worth. More pronounced chocolate notes complemented by a yeast profile that reminds me of a generic 'amber' ale. Minimal hop presence on the nose.
Bitter-sweet on the first sip, and dominated by roasted, dark malt. Salty? Yep, a little salty (note: I haven't had anything salty since breakfast, and did not eat anything before or during this review...) The hop presence begins to poke its nose out from behind the dense wall of toasty malt goodness around the end of the palate, and does so mostly in the aromatic portion. These are definitely not your typical "C" hops, either, but maybe an English variety? Smokey quality is present throughout the drink, and I rather enjoy that. The bitterness -however mild- lingers quite nicely alongside the chocolate notes, but this one never strikes me as outright sweet, despite its focus on the malt.
Quite robust in a way, but this is nonetheless a mild and easy-drinking beer. Probably worth picking up a growler the next time I'm down the river : )

All of the beers at Monarch are pre-prohibition styles, so that was kept in mind for this review (transcribed from notes). After doing some googling, it appears these beers are contract brewed by Viking.
Dark red orange body in the light, otherwise reddish brown. A creamy cap of eggshell foam that has nice retention. Fruity, estery aroma, some sort of fruit possibly grape or plum. Sweet flavor, malty and somewhat fruity from the yeast. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Not so much roasty or all that complex. In modern terms, it's more of a red ale. A little cloying, I couldn't drink alot of it.
